The End Is ROUGH!

LHCF Ladies, I need your help! I finally stopped lurking and joined the board today- might as well make use of it right  ?

I've been natural for several years now (last relaxer in 2003), but started really paying attention to my hair last year. I have ALWAYS Had a problem with my ends, even when I was relaxed. Now that I am natural, I usually wear my 4b hair in a fro/puff- at least 75% of the time. Today I blowdried my hair (which I don't do often) and twisted it. My ends were scraggly as *insert expletive* !!!!!:wallbash: I was too mad (perm rods and Fantasia IC to the rescue!). To top it off, my hair is quite uneven. I'm so close to APL, but I'm wondering if I should just start 2009 off with a hairCUT. Not a trim, but a cut, just to help even it out and start out fresh with my ends. What would you do?

If its just dry add moisture to them 2x daily. Have you even trimmed your hair since you been natural?

I def agree with delray.

I recommend that you trim those ends and as your hair gets longer, you can just even it out little by little. Its best to trim those bad ends while you are ahead, before it gets worse. I noticed that the more I trim my hair, the faster and healthier it grows.

I'm afraid mine are going to be like that too. If my ends are jacked, then I will just start trimming little by little and keep nursing them so that it doesn't get worse. In the meantime, you may want to stop with the fros and puffs. These styles can be bad for your ends, especially if you have a problem with dryness.

Your ends may be rough from wearing your hair in the puff so often. That style allows your ends to tangle up and leaves them exposed leaving each strand to fend for itself. Maybe you should try twists or even twistouts, something that tucks your ends away and bunches the ends of the hair together more so the strands can help each other stay moisturized.

So what I would do is start with a good 1 inch trim, (depending on how far up the damage/dryness is) and then start protecting them ends from the elements in twists, braids or something!

Hope this helps.

I agree.

I'm suffering from the same thing, and it's due to wearing my hair in a wash 'n go 100% of the time.

And, welcome!

Welcome to the board.

I would get a good trim. Then, stop wearing puffs because that's just asking for dryness. You need to up your moisture and Deep conditioning. As your hair grows you can trim more if necessary.

I remember my first year of being natural I only retained about 3 inches of growth because I was always wearing my hair out. Constantly exposing my ends lead to dryness, splits and breakage. So, I reiterate, ixnay the loose endsnay!

Awww man, I think I'm gonna have to ease up on my ever-faithful puff huh? This hair is a lot of work :ohwell:, but as long as I have to wear it everyday I might as well make it look good! Thanks

Thanks for the welcome, I feel at home already- I don't have to just peek through the windows anymore! I think I might just go the trim route, so ya'll can see me rockin that MBL or WL! Anksthay!

As a fellow natural with dry ends...No, don't cut just get a good trim and keep up the deep conditioning and protect those ends .

Looking back, I got the most growth with my hair when I wore it in twists most of the time. I still had dry ends but I really could have done more to moisturize them too.

See my siggy pic where my hair reached APL. I'm trying to get it past that point now by twisting and wigging.

Oh, welcome!!!
