In the past I always had a long, thick, and full head of hair. I'm a 4b and was nearly waist length. The I graduated from college and thought I had to have my hair "done" by a professional. Well we all know how that story goes. I mean, I could tell when my stylist was having a bad day based on how my hair turned out after a salon visit.

Fast forward 5 years - Yesterday I cut off much of my stringy, porous, splt end, over processed hair and vowed to take care of my own hair. No one else will love and take of my hair the way I do. Until yesterday I was experiencing horrible breakage and nothing seemed to work, so here's what I did:

*Cut off the damaged hair that had been over processed - about 4.5 inches

*Did a Aphogee protein treatment

*Followed it up with Porous Control Shampoo and Conditioner - note if your hair is taking forever to dry, that might be a sign your hair is very porous - this shampoo conditioner combo might help

*Saturated my hair with Nexxus Humectress and sat under the dryer (on low heat) for 45 mins.

*While damp put WGO on my roots and Kemi Oyl Shea butter pomade through out my hair and pulled in back into a bun - using a phony pony. (not enough hair left to use my own :-(

*Air Dried my hair (dried a lot faster than before after using Porous control products)

*I noticed nearly zero breakage and my hair is smooth and shiny.

*I've started using mild relaxers to manage my natural curl pattern. Will self apply every 10-12 weeks.

I will no longer be a slave to the salon - I'm through with giving my Saturdays away to sitting in a salon. I will spend the money I save to feed my PJ habits (I'm getting better as I find things that work for me).

Thank Goodness for LHCF!

I know what you mean. Being a slave to the salon is not the deal. I am thankful for the LHCF too. I have learned so much here. One of the major things I have learned is the same as you mentioned---No one will love and take care of your hair as much as you will!!! I have given up salons. It does not matter if they are upscale or the best at the moment---No one can love my hair and saturate it down with conditioner like I will. Take care

It was very brave of you to do that. I commend you!

Me too! I need that money for my Salerm Wheat Germ Mask and LUST

Thanks for all the validation that I made the right choice by taking control of my hair. Poohbear, I guess I have about 5.5 inches remaining (shorter in some areas) just enough to pull up into a cute little pony tail. About 1.5 inches of it is new growth. I wish I would have known all that I've learned here sooner. But it's never too late and I'm on my way. My goal is to have 6 more inches of healthy hair by Jan. 2006.

I agree. I went through hell, time, money, and too much hair while being a "slave" to the salon. Since LCHF I've been looking out for my own locks now.

I too say thank goodness for LHCF all of the time! It's been quite a learning experience and a very positive one. It sounds like you are already on your way to great success with your hair growing. Welcome aboard!

Good for you!!

Now you are armed with lots of hair knowledge and you don't have to be a slave to salons anymore.

Isn't it wonderful knowing how and what to do with your own hair??
