when i went to the store on friday i was looking for some new moisturizer, so i looked at the ors olive oil in the jar dipped my finger in it and put a lil on my hair in the back, did my shopping, and went home. later on i felt my hair where i put it on to see how it felt. I do this all the time when i go to the store because i dont want to buy something then get home and realize it doesnt work on my hair. Am i the only person that does this?

I dont try any products,I dont think its sanitary to do something like that, even if there is a tester. I always check a product for telltale signs of finger prints. I purchase a different one if I think there is a chance that someones fingers have been in the product.

That truly is a horrible habit that will get you into trouble if (when) caught by the the proprietor. Personally, I purchase samples to test products out before I purchase a huge container. Or shop in stores where the staff will provide samples if you simply ask for them.

PS - Its habits like this that causes the prices of things to go up, as store owners try to recoup the costs of unsellable products.

if i see a bottle of lotion (the squeeze type) already open and the top popped up, I'll pump a dab to try it out. I have never taken a jar of something and opened it up to try out. Thats a loss to the company cause in a lot of cases people wont buy it and they have to eat the costs. Which means that they turn around and increase the prices for US.

This is why I always check my jars to make sure no one's fingers has been in it. It is highly annoying to buy a new product and then realize someone has been in it before you have.

Not trying to knock you OP, but no I don't do this. I normally buy a trial size. If there isn't one and I really want to try the product then I just buy it. If it doesn't work for me I give it one of my sisters or a friend.

I'm sure you are not the only one who does this but I am thankful that most people don't do this. My mom works at Walmart and when people open things, they have to get rid of them or mark them down. And as others have said, the store has to recoup its money somehow.

I don't do it, but I do check to make sure it has not been done before I go home with the product. I don't want to pay for something someone else has been playing it.

This is why I get my jars and bottles from the middle to the back of the row... I never take the first one :nono:

Plus, if you email or call the companies many times they will send you samples!!! No need to dip, dab, and run

Hmmm not breaking any seals here-- I wonder if people make a distinction between opening and smelling products and actually opening and testing/using/dipping fingers them?

I can see peeling open seals being wrong in any instance, but smelling a conditioner where the person didn't technically tamper with the product... I might have to let that one pass

No, not at all. I heavily research products and look at the ingredients before I buy products so I have a fair idea what to expect.

I only really try to buy new products from CVS or Whole foods... they take back almost ANYTHING especially Whole foods!

No, I heavily research a products ingredients, company, compare products and read 100+ reviews on the product. Then I'll buy a small size of the product and if I feel like it's live up to my expectations, I'll purchase the full size.

I feel for you OP

Anyway, no I don't do that. But I do always smell things before I buy them (things that don't have a seal). This is why I always go straight to the back for my products. I don't want stuff that someone's been dipping in :nono:

Yeah it is unsanitary to dip your finger in a jar but I have sprayed a squirt in my hands (sta sof fro or whatever its called). It's wrong I guess because its stealing but I'm not touching the product and one squirt missing won't hurt anyone.

Anything I poke, I pay for. And if I've poked it, that means I'm going to buy it, I just want to try out the consistency on my hands. I don't poke and have second thoughts.

I have so many sisters and friends, if I buy it and don't like a product, I can always pawn it off on someone else. :)

The lady at the BSS I go to usually has testers, and will give me free samples of just about any product she carries.

Thanks for the samples tip. I too get my items from the back or middle of the row but my dh loves to mess with my mind and inquire...what if someone tampered with the product and placed it back in the middle to hide it. Only he would think of that. I also do this when grocery shopping for items that are breakable like taco shells. I've never thought to check my items before purchasing but thankfully, I've never seen any finger indents in my item. I will check everything from here on out.

OP, I get what you're saying and what you're trying to accomplish. I might have been guilty of squirting some non-tester lotion once or twice but I don't make a habit of it because I personally don't feel that it is right. For me, it's not about driving costs up, it's just about what I consider right and wrong.

i'll lift the cap up to smell it, but i never touch it. imagine if everybody who came down the aisle before you put their germy hands in a product you wanted to buy...thats nasty. maybe i could understand if it was a product that you squeezed out (even though i want every single drop thats sposed to be in there when i buy i product), but dip & run? no bueno.:nono:

This is why all products should come sealed.....i bought some Shea moisture product the other day came home and saw a big finger print in it and it was the last one on the shelf i was so mad and disgusted.

Ummm, sorry OP, but that's triflin! I have popped a cap to smell a product but would never dip my finger in it or break a seal...or even squirt it on my hand. That is exactly why I stay taking products from the very back and some people look at me like I'm crazy when I move 3-4 bottles out of the way to get to one in the back...

I buy something, keep the receipt, then if I don't like it I will return it. I don't feel doing it that way because, well, I just wasn't a happy customer. Only problem is not all stores allow this

Nope I dont do that but I do search the reviews here and on youtube before I buy anything. You'd be surprised that all you have to do is do some research and you'll know what you're getting before you buy.
