Should I try to do it myself of should I let the hairdresser handle it? Any specific things to do when it comes to washing, combing?

I would say it's best to have someone help you do it as not to accidentally cut pieces of your hair instead of the thread. If you do decide to do it yourself:

1) Use small cuticle scissors
2) Pull the thread away from the braid as not to cut any of your hair
3) Take your time
4) Be very careful with the thread knots
5) Comb out/detangle every braid - this will help prevent the hair from matting when you wash; don't be afraid of the initial shedding, your hairs have not been able to naturally shed for the whole time you've had it braided.

Good luck, taking a sew-in out can be just as time-consuming as putting it in. Expect to spend at least an hour taking it out.
