Last but not least...no updo, but I just had to show you this one of a Vaudeville actress of the name Kathlyn Jones.

Not everyone was into the prissy look  She was beautiful!!

I've got some extremely old school African pictures that show a variety of protective styles (mainly West Africa)

me trying to do simulate the banana curls

Very nice. Did you use curling rags like they did back then?

This was no updo, but her hair is amazing!

...

You have the most amazing pics. I wonder if #1 is a hair piece? Have to ask coz the front looks different than the back.

She looks very modern.

I like "prissy". Prissy = neat = classic chic. :)

I just twirled around my fingers. But back in the day when I was a little girl, my mom used paper bags for this look. It was a special hairdo - usually for Easter. You just brought back some memories!

Thanks ladies for sharing the beautiful pics from way back. I love looking at old photos. I wonder why no one smiled showing their teeth.

The first picture-My hair was styled like this for my cousin's wedding & it took 4hrs/They put me under the dryer...It was well worth it..

Happy Hair Growing!

Wow! I bet it was breathtaking on you though. I'm definitely trying to wear one of these styles to a ball or gala when my hair gets long enough.

@andromeda, you start some of the most interesting threads!

ETA Thank you!
Thanks, Nonie!

Curly Chronicles from youtube just started a retro natural hair blog and has some cute styles, here's the link

Cool! She was one of the first YTers that I subscribed to and I noticed she has a knack for those retro styles from the 30s and 40s. I definitely want to try some of those out, even though they're not from "waaay back".

I love these pictures Im always curious about our past and pictures give us a glimpse. I was checking also to see if the ladies had long hair but with alot of the styles being updos I cant tell.

LOVE this top! Just got a great steampunk top from Tambukiki on eBay (also on FB). Similar shape, but I got a sleeveless, spring version.

MrsPeaceLily:

The reason why was because they didn't have the technology that we did back then. They often had to hold those poses for long periods of time before the picture was captured, hence the reason why so many people never smiled.

Now if someone thinks I am wrong, blame my teachers and the books I read as a child because that is where I got the info from :spinning:

What an amazing idea for a thread! My Grandmother has at least a hundred pictures from her childhood to adulthood of black women from the South(friends and family) in pinned up styles, it's amazing how many styles they wore. My Grandmother wore her hair pinned up her entire life and maintained very heathy hair due to the lack of styling and heat. I'm inspired to try some of these styles out!

That's probably true but also dental care was a luxury. Poor and black people didn't see the dentist and many had rotten or no teeth.

^^^^Thanks for bumping. I was in this thread the other day and I did a modified (read: bootleg) version of this style.

Not gonna post pics of the result. :look:

Last week, I did this style:

Love these styles.

I set my hair on flexi-rods and pin the hair up with sweep bangs. An easy get up and go style, with very little prepping at night.

Thank you, Andomeda! I cannot believe this thread! I had seen some hairstyles from the period on the Oyin web site, was trying to find the page again but never could:perplexed. You've solved my search problem. I also love and want to recreate the natural hair displayed on the old sepia photos. Thanks again:grin:.

Love the pics..seeing all that nice hair I can't help but wonder how in the world did the notion that BWs cant have long hair came from. Im puzzled.
