Successful Heat Users

If you use heat successfully-meaning retaining growth-weekly or bi-weekly could you give me some tips. I've decided air drying is ok for me but not styling wet hair. I get too much breakage from this and I don't have the time to sit 3 to 4 hours for a rollar set. I want to air dry and flat iron. Any suggestions on retaining length and saving my ends while doing this?

Have you read the hair guide from wanakee's website hairoil.com? She gives good information on how to use heat successfully.

My personal suggestions would be to make sure to moisturize hair and ends daily. Do deep conditioning treatments and protein treatments as necessary. Use the lowest heat necessary to get your hair straight. No heat in between. Get regular trims.

good tips and also use some kind of heat protectant. Right now, I'm in love with Nexxus Heat Protexx - it's light, not stick, and has a nice smell

While I was in college last year I retained a lot of length even though I blowdried and flat ironed my hair once a week.

I always DCed my hair during every wash for 30-60min. I use a leave-in conditioner and then applied a worthy heat protectant on my hair while wet. I would begin blowdrying on a low setting with a wide toothed comb. When my hair became 50% dry I would use a round brush. After blowdrying I flat ironed my hair. I only wore my hair down once or twice a week because i don't like the idea of it rubbing against my shirt. Every other day I would moisturize my ends and put it up.

I've used heat 2-3 times a week for years and grew out a short cut to waist length that way.
I think weekly deep conditioning and hot oil treatments helped me retain length. That's the only explanation I could come up with.
After joining the board I realised that I was really abusing my hair so I've cut the heat down a little. I don't blow dry as hot or flat iron on high anymore.

Thanks Hairlove for the Hairoil.com site. That info was insightful! :)

After months of airdrying and not using heat on my hair, I started to really "miss" my hair. With 3 month stretches and my hair not being relaxed bone straight, shrinkage has been a constant companion to me. :(

Now that I am getting my regimen down, I have just started airdying with my ends set on self holding jumbo rollers. This sets the ends and they look a million times better than when I would just airdry with my hair hanging loose. This weekend on clean airdried hair, I prepped my hair with WGO and VO5 Heat Defense Mist, then flat ironed from the roots to mid shaft ONLY, to straighten and smooth the hair. I love it!! I protect my ends from heat and they really don't need straightening as they have already been "roller set." I plan to do this only once week. This is my plan to safely use heat on my hair.

Thanks you guys!! I did flatiron my hair yesterday using olive oil and Tres Semme heat protectant. I used a`ceramic iron on 275. So far no shedding and my hair still feels moisturised! I will only do this once a week and leave the last inch or so alone. I will make sure to deep condition before before a flatiron.
