Hi Everyone,

I vaguely recall someone here saying that the ingredients in UBH Conditioner and/or Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom were basically the same as another product. If so what are they? Don't have them in front of me, but I know UBH has some aloe vera concentrate, oils, and some kind of jelly(?), and the Kiehl's has lanolin oil, cholesterol, and silk protein (powder?). Before I plunk down those bucks, I would like to know if there is a good enough substitute. I think I'll be out of both in a couple days, but I really like them both.

I don't know about Keihl's, but UBH has similar ingredients to Fantasia Tea Naturals Conditioner and St Ives Hair Repair Intensive Conditioner.

Cathy Howse had a recipe for the conditioner in older editions of her book:

Combine 16oz of a reconstructive or protein conditioner with 8 oz. olive oil, 4oz. coconut oil, and 2 teaspoon of peppermint oil as a scalp stimulator.

Thanks Sassygirl. You reminded me I bought some peppermint oil from the Body Shop several weeks ago. But I didn't see coconut oil. Anybody know where I can get some? And best protein/reconstructor? I haven't seen many of the products mentioned here. For example, where can you get pure glycerin and KeraCare?

Re Kiehl's, there's got to a wholesaler somewhere offering a markdown. An 8 oz container costs $29, the bigger one is $55 at Nordstrom's, and I think the price is the same at the web site. Ugh.

Are you sure DeQ? When I tried silk groom I remember that I paid between $16-$18 for it. Maybe it was a smaller bottle.

Yeah, there is a 4 oz bottle on the web site for $17. Nordstrom's didn't have the small size. When you add s/h ($5), I think that's still a lot for the amount of product. $22/4oz in a few days versus $29/8oz right now. You know, not the greatest of options. That's why I was looking for a good substitute.

You can get coconut oil and glycerin from most health/natural food stores. I've ordered vegetable glycerin online from pennherb.com and unrefined coconut oil from tropicaltraditions.com. KeraCare is sold at most Wal-Mart beauty salons, sheldeez.com, metrobeauty.com and discount-beauty.com to name a few.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I made the homemade UBH conditioner with ApHogee Two-Minute Reconstructor (the creamy one--not the stinky one). Any creamy conditioner with protein listed in the 1st ten ingredients should work.
