Would you go to a stylist who never had her hair together? Everytime you went her hair was pulled in a pony, or wrapped in a towel (just washed)?

Shoot, at least she washed it!
If she could do my hair exactly the way I want it, I don't care if she's sporting a fro, ponytail to her butt, wrapped in a rag, whateva!
My stylist comes in looking like  but there's no one else I trust with my head, besides myself.

Uh...If I won't go to the stylist of a lady with a tow up head, why the H**l would I let a stylist with a tow up head near mine?

That is a major red flag. If you can't take care of your hair, why should I let you mess in mine? At least make it look presentable or something. You are your own best advertisement (at least I am, because people are always asking me about my hair!)

i don't know...if i had a stylist then i would expect her to practice healthy hair tips too. if she doesn't even treat her own hair the way i would expect mine to be treated then that is a huge red flag

Does it count if her hair is in a weave/under a wig 24/7? She said she wore a wig everyday because her hair was so thin. Well, guess what, she overprocessed my hair and my hair was also a thin, overprocessed mess. I made that mistake once and will NOT be making it again. No way!

Nope! I had to learn this lesson the hard way. If she can't take care of hers, chances are, she can't take care of mine. Nobody will ever take care of my hair like me.

My mother used to be a stylist and she was excellent. But she didn't like doing her hair, I think because she had to do everyone elses. She never looked tore up but she used to and still does wear it in a ponytail almost everyday. It was long and healthy but never really styles just up in a ponytail.

I've had about 6 stylists in my lifetime and the best one I went to had pretty jacked up hair. Well, it wasn't jacked up but she just seemed like she didn't do much to it. My current stylist kind of had jacked up in the beginning, but I think after some peolpe asked her questions, she just keeps it short and cute. Hehe. I would be less inclined to see someone new with jacked up hair unless someone who had NICE hair and went their frequently referred me.

I think the best way to check is to look at the hair of the regular customers.

Hair that is not styled is one thing. Hair that is broken off and unhealthy is another. If her hair is not styled I completely understand. If it's chewed up I'm going to find another stylist. :yep:

Probably only if I was going to get a wig styled. But then again I've known stylists who had some gnarly hair but could do some hair. I think it'd depend entirely on my trust level with them and their other clientele.

I agree. My old stylist used to keep her hair pulled back in a ponytail all the time but it was healthy. Usually she would start the day with it down but she would pull it back over the course of the day while she was working. Not to mention the fact that looks can be deceiving. I went to my moms stylist a few times. While she uses great products and is good with hair care she can't do styles worth a lick. But her hair style is always on point. She had her hair flipped one day (the sharp flips) and it looked cute so I asked her to flip mines (I would always get a wrap bc she couldn't do anything else half way decent). And why did I end up with granny curly flips that looked a hot ass mess? Come to find out another girl in the shop did her hair. Go figure. Why she ain't tell me that before I asked her to flip my hair. And she spritzed it so it's not like I could even just comb my hair out and wrap it. I was hot...

Same here. The condition of the hair itself is more important than the style or lack thereof. I sometimes bun or ponytail my hair but that is no indication of my styling skills. I think it's obvious to most that my hair is in very good condition, clean and neat, no matter how I'm wearing it. Oftentimes, when my loose hair is straightened and styled it gets in my way, especially while I'm bent over the shampoo bowl. As a result, I'll clip it up or ponytail it to keep it out of my way, and there goes my hair "style."

Representing my profession through my personal style is important to me, but not as important as protecting my hair. I hate to be wrongly judged, especially based on something as superficial as how I'm wearing my hair. I mean, it's bad enough that non-black customers are initially skeptical of my styling skills based on the fact that I often wear my natural hair in its shrunken, kinky state, but to get the same skepticism from my sisters is actually worse.

I don't know any stylist with good looking hair.

Balisi is a stylist and she has beautiful hair. It is always styled cute and it looks extremely healthy and she can do some hair.

ITA with this.

My old stylist in NY had excellent hair. Very healthy. Even her kids had long, healthy hair and that was the reason she became my stylist.

AMEN to that! My stylist used to have really long hair that she kept mostly in a ponytail because she works full time and is raising four kids under the age of 11, and I completely understand the lack of time to style it. However, the hair has always been healthy. She now has it cut short into a pixie cut because it's a wash n go type thing, and that's fine.

I can't front, the BEST stylist I ever went to had hair like Cynthia (anyone who's seen Rugrats and remembers Angelica's favorite doll knows what I'm talking about). Her head was a hot mess, but she made sure my hair was healthy and gave me the best cut I've ever had. Women of every race would stop me on the street to ask who did my hair. And to top it off, she wasn't scissor happy. If I didn't mind a 4 and a half hour drive here and there I'd still go to her.

Oh, there's also a stylist that I've gone to in MD who does good hair and her hair looks like a rat's been chewing on it.

I agree. It's kind of like going to see a personal trainer who was obese. I would not feel confident in their service.

my old hair stylist would neve have her hair done, but she could do some hair, mine and my sisters. my father alway says if there are two barbers one with good hair cut and the other with a bad hair cut you go to the barber with the bad hair cut cuz he cut the one with the good hair....

That is the darn truth. I learned that the hard way, so many times.

My stylists has a tore up head and everyone says she has "growing hands" (i.e. she NEVER trims hair! ) Everyone who goes to her has long and/or thick hair including my mom (she's been going to her for years!) so YES! If he or she can help me in growing my hair, then I say grow on stylist!:)

ETA: BTW, I only go for relaxers every 12 weeks or some special occasion (until I learn to roller set well)
