What do you contribute your hair strength to? Are you relaxed or natural, coarse or fine?

Is it a specific ingredient i.e. eggs, henna, silica, protein?

Is it a technique i.e. scalp message, silk scarf at night, brushing, cold water rinsing, no poo, no heat what makes your hair oh so strong?

I have a couple of issues I would also like to discuss here. First off, it is very difficult to keep the balance between moisture and protein. How do you determine which your hair is in need of and how do you keep the balance?

The other issue which I suspect is a big problem amongst us PJs. When you find a good product how do you keep yourself from continuing to try new products? Errgh, this addictive behavior has got to stop!

When you say strong do you mean hair that can take a beating and then some or just strong like your protein moisture balance is on point and you rarely get breakage?

My hair is relaxed 4b and yet very strong. Stylists in the the past have commented on it's resiliency. I don't need regular does of protein. Unless it's right after a touchup, I add a dash protein to my moisturizing conditioner about every 6-8 weeks. In my case it's not the products that i owe it to, it's the nature of my hair. My struggle is keeping it happily moisturized, lol.

I was never a PJ but unnecessary experimenting only leads to unnecessary setbacks :nono:. I'm trying my damnest to find what works for me, so I'm less reluctant to collect products just because they're new.

Both. Hair that rarely breaks, super strong asian strong.

^^ You pretty much need to ask Asian people about that. Or look up websites with Asian hair tips - I do this and find them very useful. But even Asian hair care methods aren't going to turn my hair into Asian hair. You might also learn some useful things by looking at the waist length and hip length challenge threads on this board. Overall I find the longer the hair, the simpler and more basic the care.

Being gentle with my hair (i.e-good hair practices)
Genetics
Patience

My hair hates ALL forms of protein (even things like panthenol throws it off) so I never use them. EVER.

Hair breakage is not an issue for me, however, I do suffer from incomplete splits. Other than that, my hair is very strong and it takes a lot of abuse for it to become REALLY damaged to the point that it is breaking off.

That sounds like it'll be a fun read, any particular direction you could point me in.

To The Op:

Genetics and low maintenance to keep it simple :)

A lot of what ms-gg said:
gentleness, genetics, patience!

My hair has been 'over-processed' 3 times over before (way before I BC'd btw: relaxer+bleach+dye+more bleach or a similar pattern) and still it was fairly 'strong.' My mom always gave me the side eye for this. I believe my hair is somewhat resistant? After having a relaxer (usually coarse), my hair would revert fully within a week-so my mom tells me. :look: I've never experienced split ends or thinning ends either.
I do use henna-just started doing so back in August.

My hair's very thick and coarse, I don't use protein treatments so I'm no help in that arena; I do have to be diligent to keep my hair moisturized and it's low-porosity!

If I find a product that works and I really love, I get starry-eyed. *_* Do I always continue to buy it? :look: pfft if I did I'd probably run my pockets ragged. As a new rule, I've started to only use products I can get on the ground:shipping makes a HUGE difference, and who wants to wait anyway? :p

Oh and my hair is natural!

I just drugggg myself out of the the Hair2Heaven thread. HE hello hydration works wonderful for me most of the time better than Kenra moisturize. I saved myself the shipping cost plus the $12. My product is always on sale and never more than $4. I think this will be my 2012 resolution no new products that's so boring.

I have to agree with a lot of what has been said. Even when my hair was relaxed and I had HORRIBLE hair practices, my hair was still very resilient because it's fairly coarse naturally. My hair cannot take real protein treatments, only the 2 min Aphogee about every six weeks. I decide based off of when my curls start to look a bit limper than usual. Otherwise, it's moisturizing products to combat the "strength." As far as PJism is concerned, I make a hair inventory for shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, butter, and oil. I only allow myself to use one in each category until the bottle is empty, then I can purchase another kind and see how my hair reacts (unless I have a horrible reaction). Essentially I like to give my hair enough time to figure out if it like a product or not by using it in a variety of ways, and stay out of the BSS. Also, I go for products for "Coarse, unruly hair."

I hate to quote myself but I am so gladdd I did. Its a scam fo'real:yep:

I'm natural (and loving it). :yep:

I contribute my hair's strength to: eating healthy, taking vitamins, taking good care of my hair. I also believe that less is more (when it comes to hair care regimen and number of products used).

I believe ladies w/ strong hair regardless of natural or relaxed tend to have a high protein diet naturally.

I am Natural - many years in.

Less is more for me. I don't have time to deal with crazy hair practices... so - I now - do what I can to keep it in a style for weeks at a time.... with moisture and oils..... =)

For me... I learned....

1. Braids.... Cornrows or individual braids are easy to deal with.....other wise... my hair is in a blow dried bun.
2. Clean Eating
3. Intense Workouts

These things have given me strong hair.

I attribute my strong hair to it being so coarse aka genetics and gentle handling of my hair. Sometimes I look at my shed hair and I'm sitting there like damn my strands are thick lol. If I were to do nothing else other then shampoo/condition, wash in braids, blow dry and press my hair back to back (with no breaks) which I did for years, I could maintain at BSL. To reach WSL I have to put forth an effort ie. long term PS, DC, be extra gentle and be on top of my moisture & protien.

Aphogee 2 Step does give my hair a serious boost of strength that lasts a good 3-4 weeks, but my hair is already pretty strong to begin with.

What vitamins do you take?

I think I will try to increase my protein increase by eating the greek yogurt 4to 5 times a week.

Weekly light protein by way of Motions CPR or adding an egg and/or full fat yogurt to my moisturizing DC. Lately, I've been using MT as a protein tx -- I'm trying to use it up.

If my hair starts to feel over-moisturized mid-week, I rub in some Infusium 23.

My hair is natural, fine, kinky/coily/poofy.

I also eat an Egg McMuffin for breakfast every workday (don't judge me, LoL) and I looove turkey bacon. We tend to eat a lot of chicken breasts for dinner.

MzSwift when you use an egg in your DCs, do you jut plop a whole egg in there and stir? Or do you only use certain parts of the egg? And do you do this overnight or for a few hours?

Sent from my iPhone using LHCF

kupenda -
I use the whole egg.
I only keep it on for about 15-25 minutes with a plastic cap, no heat. LoL
I'm too afraid to leave a protein tx in for much longer than that -- I've read too many horror stories.
HTH! :)

Mostly genetics. Conditioning and moisturising keeps it strong...but mostly soft.

Even when I was doing everything wrong, my hair became kind of dry but it didn't get brittle or break.

genetics! for the first year of me transitioning i didnt even condition yup thats right:look::lol:

I never understood the exercise = growing hair i never worked out and my hair was always past apl without me trying hairdresser would always cut it back

The only things i ALWAYS do is sleep with silk scarf.........ALWAYS oil ends did this relaxed and now as a natural

I also dont have a problem with mositure/protein as i never jump from one extreme to the other causing me to HAVE to NEED a emergency treatment and messing up the balance of my hair

I didnt even do protein treatments when i was relaxed and my hair was STRAIGHT so yeah maybe my hair strands are thicker than i think?

The one time my hair has ever been matted and tangled was when i used organics root stimulator my hair has never been like that in my life and thought it would never start feeling like my hair again:nono:

In regards to the pj issue im in london so they dont sell the ''natural'' fancy ranges here in shops just online and im too bitter/cheap to try them when why are always SOOOO much more here for some kitchen cabinet shea butter and oil mix ill pass:rolleyes:

I noticed a tremendous improvement in the strength of my hair when I started taking MSM. It's required for the building blocks of protein which provides stronger hair. I started with 1000 mg 1x daily and gradually over a 6 month period increased to 4000 mg, split a.m and p.m. along with 50% dose of Vit C.

I hardly ever get breakage or split ends really, which I am grateful for.

I don't really do protien treatments I just use a light protien leave in like infusium 21 from time to time.

I stay out of my hair, wash n dc when needed. Take a multivitimin
