Stretching Relaxers.....

I know that Beana mentioned the possibility of stretching relaxers with Humecto. What other products or techniques have enabled/enable you to stretch relaxers?

I usually go 10 weeks but I would like to go 12 weeks if possible at all.

Thanks in advance.

Keracare Humecto is a moisturizing deep conditioner. Humectress is a conditioner made by Nexxus with the option to be used as a leave-in as well.

I'm currently 5 weeks post relaxer with an inch of new 4 a/b growth and hair minutes away from brastrap...(at the point where sometimes i think it is b/s length and sometimes i think it isn't... Anyone else reached this length?? Isn't it frustrating??)

Anywayz, After the 8th week I avoid wearing my hair straight. I wear it down in braid outs (less combing needed), up in a wet bun or braided under a wig or scarf. I manipulate my hair (combing & styling) when the new growth is damp (90% dry); this is usually after I shampoo-condition it.
I am also learning how to airdry; but I cheat sometimes...

I experiment with straigtening balms and leave-in conditioners on the new growth... John frieda's wind down hair serum and VO5 nourishing cream r performing well 4 me so far. I am able to stretch my touch-up 12 -13 weeks out of braids (individual extensions)and about 16 weeks if braided.
I also happen to have the best detangling comb... (y'alls jilbere ain't got nuthing on this one...

) Its difficult 2 describe but I'll try. Its sort of like a 2 rowed pick comb with spiked teeth set apart about 2 cm. The teeth in the first row don't lie directly infront of the teeth in the second but kinda in-between (like seats in a cinema hall or the keys on a keyboard) Hope I haven't lost anyone with that description. Anyway, its the best comb and gentle on new growth. I picked it up in London but I'm sure it can be found in other places.

What has helped me stretch relaxer in the past are Pantene Smooth and Sleek, and Cream of Nature shampoo. I will definitely be restocking those two items when my hair starts to get unmanagable. I'm only at 6 weeks, so I have about 1 more month of "good" hair days, lol...

i've just realized that this week will be my 12 week without a relaxer?! good lord. i don't even know how i manage. i haven't looked up the hari categories yet (i'm new), but i think i'm type 4

When my hair was long enough to wear ponytails and buns, I could stretch my touch-ups to every three to four months. I'd wash and condition my hair. Then, I'd generously apply Luster's curl moisturizer/activator to my hair, especially the new growth. I'd comb my hair into a ponytail (carefully detangling) while still damp. I'd do a ponytail or a bun, then wrap it with my scarf overnight. This would "set" my hair. When I got home every night I'd immediately put my scarf on again. The key was to maintain my style without combing everyday and keeping the hair moisturized.

By the way, this time around I'm stretching my relaxers to 12 weeks by using a simple styling method. After washing and conditioning, I divide the hair into four sections and detangle with the comb I just posted (hope it's not a soliciting link). Then I moisturize the hair smoothing down with my hands from the edges of each setion down to the ends. I hold each section with a duck bill clip when I'm done for convenience. After I've moisturized the whole hair, I then use bobby pins to clip the hair down kinda like the alternate wrapping method. Then I either dome dry or tie a scarf and air dry. When the hair dries, I comb gently with my seamless comb and smooth into a bun.

Unfortunately, thorough combing of the hair is just not something I find useful as my touch-up nears. It involves losing way too much hair on a regular basis. So instead just before the touch-up, I comb in very small sections with a smaller-toothed comb to detangle properly.

I do much of what Kenyana does. For products, I love Wildgrowth Hair Oil, L'Oreal Unfrizz Taming Creme, and/or castor oil (for some reason, my natural hair drinks up oil more than my chemically altered hair) - and of course, my standby, distilled water. I've found the trick for me is keeping my hair moist and pliable while minimizing manipulation. I really concentrate moisturizing conditioners at my roots, then ends, and then everywhere else (in that order). I detangle my hair in the shower stream. Fortunately, buns don't require a lot of fussing, so that's my #1 style of choice. I put it into a bun, fresh out of the shower and let my hair dry that way (although the ends stay damp).

Protein conditioners, deep conditioners, a good leave-in and good oils have helped me to stretch my touch-ups. Also when you start getting a certain amount of new growth, protective styles and not manipulating the hair too much also helps.

When I was pregnant I stretched mine out to 7 months doing exactly that JRW. It was strictly trial and error but this is what I ended up doing. I just accepted that I couldn't really style it and just left it in buns and updo's. I only detangled in the shower. In other words I just left it alone.

What I do is put the conditioner in my hair and sit under the dryer for 15 minutes. Then I get back in the shower and rince out the conditioner and detangle with a wide tooth comb under the stream of the water as much as I can. Once I get out of the shower and add my leave-in and moisturizer I sit back under a dryer on low setting for about 15 minutes. The heat from the dryer helps to lay my hair down.

I really don't care for putting my hair up in dripping wet buns but I don't mind to do it when its partially damp. I generally follow this routine six weeks post relaxer.

Hello janeiR36!
I enjoy reading ur posts over at the ezboard relaxed hair care club! I cannot for the life of me figure out how to join/sign up there so I'm glad u & sterry r members over here as well!
No, thats not my comb at all... that one has only one row of alternating sized teeth. The one I'm talking about is more of a pick comb (ref to the location of the handle) and not a 'rake' Secondly, it has two rows of teeth and not just one.... i REALLY need to get a digi cam... don't think I can describe this one...lol!

shinyblackhair I am currently visiting in toronto and see that u r in ontario. Where do get your hair products and hair done?

Daviine,

What type of hair styles are you wearing on a daily basis? IMO, a hair style that requires little manipulation would also help you stretch out your relaxer. And of course, a very good conditioner (that gives your hairs LOTS of slip).

Allandra.....I wear my hair in a bun. In the past, however, I used braidouts but that requires me to wash my hair every 2-3 days. I've been using LUST, Pantene Smooth and Sleek, and Feria Color Moisturizing Treatment with good results so far but then again I'm only at week 9. But this hard new growth is something else.....I may not be able to stretch my relaxer out this time around.
