Stressed out about my layers

It's probably the way you've been styling your hair! I'd probably chill with the wrapping for a while. Maybe pinning your hair up in pin curls in the front will help. Wrapping your hair every night can be crazy on the weaker spots! Also, you got to have some more faith in your retention progress!

Def. up your protein treatments, ORS replenishing paks, aphogee 2 min reconstructors, are light proteins that us relaxed heads need every other week!

And NO MORE PITTY PARTY! ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE.. (Hair) Lets work * Diddy Voice*

Thanks for the replies ladies. I use protein every week, I use Aphogee 2 min recon but I leave it on as a deep conditioner for 30 mins plus I also use a moisturising cond.

I've tried protective styles, minimising the heat etc etc etc etc etc etc basically I look after my hair. I will admit sometimes I fall off my routine with the moisturising when I am tired but I always slab a bit of something on my hair each day. I relax every 10-12 weeks

Basically what I am saying is I look after my hair but it still breaks. It falls out everywhere constantly every day..

My hairdresser suggested I moisturise using a curl-activator such as S-curl what do you guys think? I am relaxed 4A/B. She also suggested I put one or two tracks of weave in where it is breaking to give it a rest.

You are relaxed, so I assume you get touch-up every so often? Unless you have zero new growth, then your hair is growing and your problem is probably breakage. Check your regimen and rebuild from scratch if necessary.

If it were me, I'd step away from the sissors for 12 months. No trims at all. I'd revamp my regi to include - protein (you're relaxed), serious moisture, protective styling, minimal heat and vitamins/nutrition. Don't worry about if the protective styling is boring - buns are beautiful. As long as your hair is neat and clean, leave it alone. Be like Nike and Just Do It for one year. Next Feburary you can take stock and trim/cut if necessary. But that's just me. BTW this is what I did in 2011 and finally made it to BSL. And I'm doing it again this year.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice but my hair starts to look chewed up destroyed if I go longer than 4 months without a trim.

If I was in the situation, I'd

1. get it cut in a bob and grow it out using the crown and glory method or

2. I'd get a stylist who understood my desire to grow my layers however it'd be a lengthy process since trimming would involve trimming the shorter layers or

3. Get my hair to a healthy enough point and use the Crown and Glory method to grow it out till the shortest layer reaches SL and chop off the longer layers.

My thing is to get rid of the layers now so that you can finally enjoy healthy hair and your desired length when you turn 40.

@HairQueen, every week is too often to do protein treatments, IMO, even if your hair is chemically-treated. I'm texlaxed and use protein only once per month. That much protein would send my hair into overload, and I would see breakage. I suggest backing off the protein treatments to once a month, and do not let it sit on your hair for 30 minutes...only 10 to 15 minutes max, rinse throughly, and then follow with a moisturizing conditioner that you can let sit on your hair for much longer.

I don't recall if you mentioned any heat usage. However, if you are using any kind of direct heat (blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron, etc.), take a break from these until your hair recovers. Also, when you get your next touchup, make sure the previously-relaxed ends have a protective coating (oil, conditioner, etc.) on them.

I hope your hair recovers soon.

Snip all your short layers into the same length. Ive been thru thia dozens of times. Its harder to grow oit broken off layers when they are different lengths. Section the short layers from the longer hair and then snip. U dont have to chop off all ur hair.

Thanks Ladies for all the helpful comments, I think I have worked out what the problem is now, I think it is a breakage issue as a few of you said. I think I need to swtich to a different type of moisturiser i.e. a water & glycerin type spray as the creamy moisturisers just aren't doing it for my hair. There is that particular section of my har that just WILL NOT retain any moisture no matter how much I deep cond, moisturise etc so I'm going to try S-curl or Soft n'free - one of those activator type sprays and see how I get on.

Fingers crossed that this works for my hair and I will report back on my progress.
