Is it possible to stop or reduce the amount of shedding due to the Depo-Provera shot? I first got the shot back in February and for the past few months my hair has been shedding more that usual. It's within the normal range but it's still too much for my taste. I hate washing my hair because I lose so much of it

If it's do to the shot because it is in your system still, I highly doubt there is anything you can do. When I first got the shot nurse told me that if I suffer any side effects there is nothing that can be done until the drug runs it's course.

Sorry....maybe someone else knows better.

I have not tried Depo-Provera, instead I use the patch and let me tell you it works great!!!! I have not noticed any extra shedding either.

Unfortunately, this is a side effect of the medication along with the weight gain

. Depo-provera is a long acting drug and it will take quite a bit of time to get out of your system.

I was on it also and it takes 6 mos. to 1 year for it to get out of your system that's just for 1 shot. When I got the shot earlier this year I gained weight and my shoulder lenght hair was no more by May of this year. Between the Depo and the hard water my hair came out so bad that I had to cut it really short

but hey I've been shoulder lenght b4 so I jnow I'll get there again with time and patience.

There isn't anything that you can do because as several ladies have said already it is one of the side effects.

I wanted to suggest you try Nutrine garlic shampoo and conditioner as it stopped my shedding but I don't know how it would work if the medication is causing the shedding. Maybe you could still give it a try?

Thanks. That's what I was thinking too, but I was hoping that after my body adjusted to it that the shedding would stop.

Netta1,

I'm glad you mentioned that because I was thinking about giving it a try. But I thought that shedding was a side effect of all birth control? How long have you been using the patch? Doesn't it contain hormones?

Thanks!! Do they sell that at beauty supply stores?

I stopped taking Depo because i had continuous spotting(bleeding). My last shot was in January2003, and the spotting stopped in October2004 when i had my first 'normal' period. Man, that period really hurt me sooooo bad.

I stopped taking the Depo earlier this year. I spotted for 3 months straight. I had the Depo in 2000 and I had no problems but towards the end of the year, I did notice that my hair was coming out.

Yep, they do and it's only $3.99 each, I can't stop singing it's praises. It's like a miracle in a bottle. After years of shedding this garlic potion is what did it for me. Just last Saturday I had only 4 hairs in the comb after doing my wash and roller set. 4!

The shampoo is drying to my hair -- feels like it was clarified so after the garlic conditioner I follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.

They have both scented and unscented. I use the unscented.

Rayne, you might want to check out this site.

http://www.nutrihair.co.uk/understanding_hair_loss.htm

In the UK the product is called Nutrihair. In the US its called Florisene. It's basicaly an iron pill that is supposed to reverse temporary hair loss or shedding that is due to stress, temp. illness, medication and shift in hormones (stopping/starting birthcontrols, post-menopause, etc.). The manufacturer believes that increased iron intake can reverse hairloss in women.

In the US, I ordered Florisene from www.westons.com.

Thanks ladies

I think I'm going to give that garlic shampoo a try first and see how that goes.

Has anyone found their hair to be resistant to relaxers while on taking the shot?

Oh my, I never thought about that!!! My hair was resistant for over a year and I thought is due to having my baby. But now that I think about it, the Depo could be the culprit because I've been off of the shot for about 2-3 months and when I relaxed my hair a month ago it took. The Depo was the only thing that was different.

Rayne, my sister started the shot about a year ago and i swear since then, her hair has been resistant to relaxers (and breaking like crazy

) Her hair lenght has changed so drastically. I suggested to her that it could be the Depo. She is really becoming frustrated and i told her i would ask the ladies on the hair board if they had similar experiences.

Thanks for responding. Anymore feedback would be appreciated

I've heard nothing but bad from friends and acquaintances about this birth control. Nothing but hair breakage and weight gain.

does regular birth control cause these same effects?

I think it depends on the person. When I was on Birth Control, my hair grew its longest

. My friend took them as well and she had normal shedding/no hair loss as well

I don't mean to freak anybody out, but I would be very careful using Depo Provera. A 22 year old girl I know was using it and developed ovarian cancer. Not saying that that was the the definite cause, or that this will happen to everyone that uses it, I'm just saying be careful with the hormones you put in to your body.
BTW, she has recovered and is doing better now.
