My niece, I don't know how many of you remember I had her picture posted a while back. But that girl's hair WILL NOT stop growing. She just turned three, her hair is 1" from her waist, granted she short but for a kid, that's a ton of hair.

Well this weekend my sister had braided her hair with beads were in the Mall and these women say, not secretely mind you loud so we could hear them.

"That's a Doggone Shame that they would put all that weave in that little baby's hair" "That's Ridiculous".

Well, before I could turn to tell my sister to ignore them, she was blurted out, "excuse, me I overheard your conversation and it is extremenely ignorant of you to assume that all black people with long hair has weave - this happens to be all her hair."

They just look kinda surprised that she responded but what did they expect, they said it so that we could hear it on purpose.

When will this stero type cease???

I can see how you feel Mindymouse. This is a crying shame. So I'm assuming that the comment was made by someone from another race? Hum...I don't understand it either. I can't believe they would say something like that out loud. Really it's no body's buisness how your niece wears her hair, even if it wasn't her's. It would have been nice if they had kept their comment to themselves. Some people can be so insensitive and mean can't they??

Blessings,
Compassion

Now that just upsets me. It's amazing how ignorant people can be and the stupid comments they come up with when it's no matter of theirs.

Girl, never. It's ashamed that blacks stereotype other blacks. They were black right

?

Stereotyping is as common to some as brushing our teeth is to others. heck there's a whole lot of it on this board
smile.gif
. It's a darn shame that people still think that way
nono.gif
. Just b/c it's long, doesn't mean it's fake!

JEALOUSY! Also being IGNORANT to the notion that our hair grows and you don't need grease and goop in it. Its a shame but I only see that within our race. It comes from their lacking and wanting what the think they can not have so they ASSume that everybody has to do things the same pitiFULL way they do.

Compassion, actually one was black and the other looked mixed. But that's the thing, we say things some times but amongst ourselves.

That was rude. Trinnie, would have heard them to if she was;nt so busy trying open a Pez. She is smart as whip too, she most likely would have asked "what's weave"

They probably were spewing negative comments, because they wanted hair like her's. Well, I'm glad your niece didn't hear them. I tell ya...it makes no sense how ugly people can be sometimes.

Blessings,
Compassion

Ain't that the truth. Some of us are so accustomed to seeing broken off damaged hair that when we see hair that is healthy and long we automatically assume that it's a weave.

Those women were very rude to make such a snide comment about a child’s hair.

Unfortunately it is as innate a human behavior as breathing.

Shame to have to direct it at a poor child, though. Seems like someone has brightly gleaming personal issues.

that is so sad. so when i get my long hair...will i have to expose my scalp or leave long tendrils hanging on purpose to let those fools know? lol

k

That was beyond rude and totally uncalled for. I'm glad your sister set them straight.

How ignorant of them!

Boadicea, I noticed you changed your avatar and I looked in your album. Your hair has really grown since July. It looks beautiful.

O.K., back to the matter at hand...

Yes, it's a shame that we equate our hair to short lengths. Unfortuanetely, mansy of us do keep shorter lengths due to our poor hair care practices. What boils my water most about this situation, Mindy, is that some people have such big mouths and they stick their noses where they don't belong. Even if they felt that way, they had no right to sit there and demean your little niece and your sister in their faces. HOw rude!

I know.

I would'nt lke to see a three yr old with extensions but you don't just go and get into peoples business like that.

My sister, said She could have asked, is that all her hair, but really it was no of there business. Now if they had compliented first like "Her hair is cute, is that all her hair" That might have came off a lil better.

Boadicea-

Your hair looks soooooo good! I can't wait until I reach that length.

Remember guys, we still have a lot blacks that are into style and not quality, which is why some still maintain the same length each year and wonder why it's not growing. I'm sure the child's hair looked nice.

I agree, I'm glad that we can prove them wrong!

Thank you very much. Care and patience, persistence and moisturizer wins the race.

SPOKEN BY A HAIR GURU

That happened to me yesterday but in a more positive context. I had just had touch-up and my hair was in a ponytail rollerset. A lady told me my hair looked so beautiful and then she asked "Is that a piece?" I knew what she meant but I was so shocked I couldn't answer at first. I figure if she thought that if she thought that other people are probably thinking it also. You work so hard to have nice, healthy hair and then people just assume it is fake. I try to take comments like that as a compliment though because it means the people think your hair looks unbelievably good

Hmmm, I really don't know how to respond to this thread, because I've seen some children whose parents put a ton of fake crap in their hair and it DOES look bad. I do agree that those women that made the comment about your niece's hair was wrong---I'm sure if they had looked carefully they would have realized that it was all hers.
However, my cousin put a lot of those small, pre-braided, curly hair pieces in her 3yr old's hair. Now, her daughter has NEVER had a lot of hair, and it is very kinky. When I met my cousin at a resturant for lunch I had no idea that she had put all that mess in her daughter's hair. It was TOO

much and she looked like a jacked up, black raggedy-ann doll!

(When I saw her I was staring so hard that I tripped in the parking lot) It was not cute at all, and of course I didn't say anything. In my opinion I don't think folks should put all that mess in a young child's head. Plus my cousin does not take care of the braids like she should & she leaves them in too long---causing more damage to her hair.
