Splitting Locs

My son is about 6 months into his loc during this time around. However I am finding that I'm not too fond of the thickness of his locs. The last time was loc'd they were a skinnier and I just thought they were overall more attractive.

Has anyone ever split their lock or seen someone else their locs and it still turned out okay, even if it went through a little bit of a rough patch at first?
