Last week I ended up cutting off a lot of hair because it was split. I am basically at where I started. I don't do direct heat styling and but I do use my bonnet dryer for rollersets and conditioning treatments and such. I do have bleached highlights that are growing out but I have never had much trouble from them.

Is there any way I can avoid splits?

Hi Karezone,

You might be able to minimize them by keeping your ends moisturized and protect them at night with a satin/silk head covering and or satin pillow case. Also I would sugguest being careful about how you detangle your hair. Never start combing hair from the root...start at the end and detangle as you work your way up to your roots. One last suggestion is to check out this thread to see if it might be of any help to you.

Do you use protein treatments every few months? I have highlights (bleach) and I noticed that using a mild protein treatment every few weeks and stronger protein treatment every 2 months or so really helped make my hair stronger with less splits. Also keep your ends moisturized and perhaps a trim 2x a year. I had my split ends trimmed a few months ago and my ends are lookiing great. Oh and make sure to protect your hair at night with a silk/satin scarf.

You also might want to try 'dusting' just the tips...that way you keep from getting big splits and then have to cut alot.(take it from someone who never got trims..and hair got thin because of it)...

Dang you shouldn't have cut all your hair off. Don't be so upset it will grow back but a good conditioner would of help instead of cutting your hair. You said you do conditioning treatments (What conditioner(s) do you use?) the one you are using is showing no improvement maybe you should find one that is going to help your hair. Also are you using heat with your conditioning treatments? Cause it would then be a waste if your not using heat. I see many ladies don't but the key to the deep conditioning is HEAT cause it get deep down in there. (its common sense) also split ends are caused from things we do, like too much heat(curl irons, flat iron), sponge rollers, hair brushes and not deep conditioning with products that improve the dry hair condition. Hair does not only split on the ends, it can split anywhere along the hair shaft, mostly caused by abusive techniques like hair brushes and exteme heat too often. To stop splitting hair whether on the ends or the hair shaft, stop doing the damaging things to your hair that causes them.
Hope this helps

The ladies gave some really good advice. Moisture is definately key. I had brittle ends for as long as I can remember and I never knew why. I thought getting a wash & set was all I needed. I might have had a deep conditioner 3x a year TOPS. Now that I know better, I keep my ends moisturized with olive oil (i use to use s-curl but i haven't lately b/c i ran out and i don't trust myself in a bss

) and keep it in a nice bun. I've worn this bun everywhere on my head just to give it a "new" look. But I digress, just keep your ends moisturized daily, sleep with a satin bonnet and/or silk pillowcase and you should be on the road to minimizes split ends.
