Just looking at the poll results and would like to know why most pople do not use grease.
I thought it was neccesary? well, it definitley is in my hair ;)
Thanks In Advance

I think most people do not use grease because most greases contain mineral oil and/or petroleum which can clog your pores and just coats the hair. It does not moisturize. I am reading Cathy Howse book now and she says all grease does is coats the hair. People use it thinking its supposed to help with dry hair but of course when you use it it doesn't make your hair feel dry because it feels greasy. It does not penetrate like a water based moisturizer does. When I was younger all my grandmother would use in my hair was grease, grease, and more grease and my hair stayed the same length for more than a decade.

I never liked putting grease on my hair because it makes dust stick in my hair. It's also hard to wash out when I was doing only co-washes. I had to use shampoo to wash it out. If I wasn't careful and it got on my face, I would get nasty pimples. There are other reasons why I don't use it anymore, but those are the main reasons I don't use it on my hair/scalp.

lol i need it too!!!

on my ends, keeps them nice and sealed. locks in the oil moisturizor i used too.

when istopped using grease i got splits and brittle ends. my hair drinks grease

If I have 1/4 inch or more of new growth, Nature's Blessings grease and Profectiv Breakfree are the only things that help get me through the dryness and breakage that seem to increase around that time.

But so many greases these days have moisturizing ingredients in them. It's really not that bad. Besides, moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, leave-ins, etc, all help with moisture. I can see grease being bad if that is all someone uses to treat hair.

When I first came to this board, I stopped using grease after I heard so many bad things. I quickly learned not to jump on bandwagons, because as soon as I went back to my grease (of course along with my other products) , my hair improved.

I don't use grease because it causes my scalp to get all cacked up and flakey, plus if gives my scalp a weird smell and sets off sebhorreah. So I use creams that doesn't contain petroleum or mineral oil to grease my scalp or just oils like WGO, etc.. But there are lots of pple that can use petroleum/mineral oil base greases and have good results.

Ditto! Try getting pimples on your scalp!! Not fun.:( If it has petroleum/petrolatum/mineral oil then it's going to stay on the shelf in that store!!

Nothing is necessary for everybody except maybe moisture in general, but the amount each individual needs varies of course, and how best to get it does too.

Grease/oil is just a no-no for my scalp. I can use oil for pre-poo treatments since it'll be washed out, but my scalp prefers to take care of itself afterwards. Otherwise I get the itchies and whatnot.

My hair is fine and just doesn't need anything as heavy as grease. I'll use a small amount of Coconut oil, or just a dab of jojoba (technically not oil and very similar to your scalp sebum) on my hair and it's fine. I like wgo applied in verrrrry small amounts on my hair, but I really do have to be careful because it tends to travel to my scalp at night (probably because I'm laying down and the hair is pressed to my scalp) and my scalp will start itching. So obviously grease would just be way too much.

it just isnt necessary...my hair and scalp feels fine without and I hate when my hair feels coated.

I cant put anything on my scalp or otherwise it'll be itching after day 2. But I used to use grease almost daily to 'moisturize' my hair. until i found out that it doesn't moisturize, but it holds in the moisture or in some cases it locks out moisture. so that is the reason why i do not use it. I use creme moisturizers and I use Oils when i need something heavier to seal my ends. Oil is a moisturizer and actually can penetrate the hair shaft. grease cannot. Also another big reason is that grease weighs down my hair. Oils do not if i use it lightly....

I don't need it and I don't really like the way it feels in my hair. When I go straight, it kills all the swing and makes my hair heavy. I also believe there is some truth to what people are saying about it preventing moisture from coming in.

I gotta use some kind of grease..My grease of choice right now is Natural Oasis..Which also has a liquid form. I also use good old fashioned Coconut Grease on my ends when I put my hair in buns or attempt the baggie method.

I have learned that what works for some dont work for others and my hurr is thuuuuuursty!!!!

ITA. I also agree with Ayeshia...I don't like weighed down hair, and a cakey scalp is straight up disgusting to me. If I scratch my head, there shouldn't be globs of goo under my fingernails. That's nasty to me.

Also, I had a dandruff problem for the longest when I was in elementary/middle school. My mother would grease my scalp religously, but it never seemed to go away. I noticed that as SOON as I stopped using grease, the dandruff problem subsided. I even did an experiment to see if it was the grease. I tried to start back using grease, and the dandruff came right back with it. I threw the tub in the trash and vowed never to use it again.

I do, however, love oil on my scalp. Sometimes my scalp tends to be dry in winter, so I like to oil my scalp lightly with WGO or jojoba oil (my fav) after I poo my hair. This keeps my scalp moisturized and supple until the next wash. :)

The condition you're describing sounds like what I found on this site: http://www.hairscientists.org/afro-hair.htm

DANDRUFF (pityriasis simplex capitis)
A scaly scalp often mistakenly considered to be a dry scalp.
The scalp like skin, undergoes cyclical renewal and dead cells are constantly being shed.

In cases of plaited hairstyles, extensions, weave-on's, locks, twists, these epidermal cells accumulate on the scalp and with regular applications of oils and greases together with trapped perspiration, may initiate a scalp irritation eventually resulting in a dermatitis.

ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS
An itchy scalp condition caused by an allergic reaction to material in contact with the scalp. It can be attributed to a number of external factors, most commonly to improperly applied chemical relaxers, build ups of heavy cosmetic products, glues used in weaving techniques and generally unhealthy scalp conditions. Subsequent applications of pomades and oils on an itchy scalp will result in folliculitis manifested by pustules surrounding the hair follicles. The inflammatory cells accumulate in response to bacteria that are able to proliferate within the partially occluded follicles. Secondary infected dermatitis causes the hair follicles to become damaged resulting in various degrees of hair loss and possibly the formation of disseminated keloidal scarring due to continual scratching.
Contact dermatitis needs early treatment in order to alleviate further possible sensitisation and to avoid irreversible damage to hair and scalp.
