The recent alleged beating of popular evangelist and author Juanita Bynum Weeks at the hands of her husband, Bishop Thomas Weeks III, has Spelman College hosting a forum Thursday on domestic violence.

"Wounds of the Spirit: Black Women, Shame and Violence in Communities of Faith" is the result, college officials said Wednesday, of "overwhelming" interest on and off campus in exploring the issue.

The Rev. Lisa Rhodes, dean of Spelman's Sisters Chapel, and the Rev. Melva Sampson with the school's Women in Spiritual Discernment of Ministry Center will lead the 5:30 p.m. discussion.

Spelman has been visible and vocal on the issue of women and violence, beginning in 2004 when some of its students and staff took rapper Nelly to task for his "Tip Drill" video, according to Rhodes.

Tonight's forum at Sisters Chapel, 350 Spelman Lane S.W., will mark the first time they will examine the issue as it relates to the church or to church leaders as perpetrators or victims, Rhodes said. School officials hopes the discussion will result in strategies that address the problem.

The talk is free and open to the public.
