So this is what's been going on. Im in summer school and I have NO money. Out of the blue my stylist called to check on me because she hadn't heard from me in so long (10 weeks). I told her that I had no money to come home and no money to get my hair done. She said that I could relax my own hair. She also said that I knew what to do even if I haven't relaxed my own hair before. She knows about the wealth of information that I've received from the forum and that I do rollersets and relaxers on my friends. She told me to base my scalp really good and use Designer Touch relaxer (what she uses on me), and to only get the new growth. Are there any other tips I should follow?

Note: Ive already washed my hair last Wednesday. I did a protein treatment with hair mayo, clarified my scalp with Nexxus Aloe Rid to get rid of the BT on my scalp, and shampooed with KeraCare Hydrating Detangling. I air dried and Ive been putting castor oil on my scalp and putting Mango Butter on the lengths of my hair and sealing with castor oil. Is there anything else I should know about preparation of the hair for a relaxer and actually relaxing the hair.

Please fill me in on what you know. Im such a first timer at this!!!!!????!!!

Also what do y'all think of this: One of my best friends kinda offered to relax my hair. I mean I kinda trust her but I know that she doesn't know the "correct" way to do stuff. I feel that she doesn't know the stuff I know now. When I came to the forum, I learned about stuff that I thought I already know. So she doesn't know what I know. She's just one of those people who has done her own hair and really doesn't focus on the health of her hair. Therefore, I think I would be better off doing it myself. She says that because my hair is "sooooooo long" (its only a little longer than shoulder length) that she needs to do it because its "soooooo much hair'. And personally I don't agree. I have a really nice texture of hair (4a) and my hair is not hard to do. I don't know. Im gonna do it myself. But Im curious. What is she talking about??? Is it harder to relax "long" hair?? I mean, you just do the new growth right????? Please explain.

Please be careful. Your hair is so beautiful and healthy, I don't want you to have a bad experience. I ended up self-relaxing last summer and it didn't go so well. :nono: I understand about the $$$ being tight though. :yep:

I posted some tips in the link below
http://jasminesbathandbeauty.blogspot.com/

If money is tight and you really don't want to DIY then try to stretch while you save a few dollars. A good way to get a relaxer for less than half the price is to go to a local beauty school that specializes in African American hair. When I was in high school and money was tight my friends and I would go to the beauty schools and let the students do our relaxers. Their work is supervised by their teachers and they would do a great job on my hair. You can go and ask questions prior to getting the actual service done. Make yourself familiar with the atmosphere and make sure that you're comfortable with how they do the application and neutralizing process just like you would if you were visiting a new salon.

Thanks ladies!!! In response to the last two post, the town I live in, there is nothing, no beauty schools or anything that caters to black people. Its basically a white town and I have tried to go to beauty schools and get my hair done at home and they always mess up my hair.:nono::nono: And to the last response, I don't have any money to get home, so that's out of the question too. Whew, times is haaaaaaarrrrrrrdddd!!!!

Dont worry things will get better, i think everyone is finding it hard at the moment...so what are you going to do?

Stretch or do it yourself?

Self relaxing for me was a tragic experience:wallbash:. Please do all of your research and even do a dry run using conditioner (chemicals are NO joke:nono:), to make sure your application time/skills are up to par before you use the real thing. Good luck!!!:yep:

I totally understand your situation. Would you be able to borrow some money from your parents? If I were you I would continue to stretch and just do a protective style till I had enough money to get my hair permed by a professional. Putting chemicals in your hair is no joke and since I dont know how to do it I wouldnt want to take a chance.

HOnestly, I think that if I did try to stretch it I think it would end up breaking, being that this is my shedding season. I thought I could do it until I started seeing other people comments. Its making me scared now. Now Im second guessing myself. I really dont know what to do now:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I personally have never had a problem self relaxing.

Practice first though, if you've never done it before. There's lots ot tutorials on this board.

My method is a little avante guard and takes some serious prep time but has never let me down.

I've tried speakdon'tdefeat and southerngirl's methods before as well. They work but I admit I like my own more. Mine is in this thread: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=130924

Whichever you decide to use, really read it first before doing it, and ask LOTS of questions.

Self relaxing requires a lot of patience and prep until you get your method down.:yep:

OMG, Supergirl what happened???

Well, I think I was too heavy handed. I think I didn't base my scalp as well as a pro did and in some places I probably based scalp and got it on the hair too, because I had some under processed sections. :( I also feel like I didn't work fast enough. The process was so messy, and a few weeks later I was experiencing new breakage, no doubt my fault. That's when I decided that it was worth $70 to have someone else do it, even as much as I hate having to depend on a stylist. But now I just go, get based, get relaxed, neutralized, conditioned, and then I bounce with a baggy on my head. :yep:
