@http://www.longhaircareforum.com/member.php?u=13177Je Ne Sais QuoiTo cut a long story short (pun intended :-) ) my hair was a mess and the most practical thing to do, in my opinion, was to start from scratch , rather than having damaged and healthy hair on the same head. It was overprocessed, and different lengths and the colour was no longer a healthy colour but sort of a brownish ginger (from relaxers, not dye). In addition it was a sort of mental purge, reflecting a lot of changes in my life.

I have not had the courage to go out of the house without my wig though. Not so much because of the hair but because I am paranoid about the way my head looks...

@Nonie - I am ashamed to say I don't have a proper regimen. I have had a lot on my plate and I have neglected that. Basically I try and co-wash every 2-3 dayswith Herbal Essences 'hello hydration' then maybe once every 10 days use the creamy aloe/olive oil shampoo. Sometimes I will do an oil rinse with coconut oil.

After washing I will use the moisturiser, seal with the castor oil, sometimes mixed with aloe vera.

I chose these products from reading the science of black hair and those were pretty much the ones I could find locally without having to jump on a train or shopping online.

I sleep on a satin pillow and use a seamless wide tooth comb and outdoors I use a lace front wig.

Congratulations! It looks kind of like mine did with my first big chop.

Is it kind of dry though because mine definitely was - steam treatments helped a lot!

nice progress!

does hello hydration have silicones in it? if so, you mm ay want to change to a shampoo that doesn't. silicones can aggravate dryness. Tresemme Naturals is available at drug stores and doesn't have silicones and is gentle.

Great progress! If I'm not mistaken, ORS Creamy Aloe is a clarifying shampoo and HE HH has cones I think. Maybe you can look into Tresemme Naturals like a previous poster mentioned. Do you need to shampoo so often? And I can't wait to be able to steam my hair :)

Congrats! Grow on, girl!

I started from scratch as well.
To combat dryness, maybe you could:
-water rinse or cowash daily
-lower your cones/sulfates use ( I use Suave TC condish and a sulfate-free poo)
-Keep a spray of water+condish+oil and use before bed and before you put on your wig.
-Baggy overnight, under your wig or while you're at home
-Use a satin skull cap with your wig AND wear it around the house
-As soon as your hair is long enough, braid it up (this absolutely worked better than anything else)
-Try DCing overnight (never personally done it)

GL and I hope you have 6 more months of great growth! :)

kupenda - are you sure it is a clarifying shampoo? In the book the science of black hair IIRC it was listed as a moisturising shampoo.

Also the description says --Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Aloe Shampoo is a creamy shampoo which removes calcium build-up and restores moisture to hair whilst it gently cleans and neutralizes. --
I live in a hard water area so need to deal with calcium build up.

How can I tell if it has sillicones in it? These are the ingredients.
INGREDIENTS: Water Aqua , Cocamidopropyldimethylamine Propionate , Trideceth-7 Carboxylic Acid , PPG-5-Ceteth-10 Phosphate , Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , Lauramide Glucoside , Lauryl Glucoside , Polyquaternium-10 , Cocoglucoside , Glyceryl Oleate , Disodiium EDTA , Olive Oil Olea Europaea , Cetrimonium Carboxydecyl , PEG-8 Dimethicone , Cetrimonium Chloride , Sulfated Castor Oil , Lecithin , Propylene Glycol , PEG-12 Oleate , Silicone Quaternium-2 , Panthenol Succinate , Fragrance Parfum , Aloe Barbadensis Gel , Glyceryl Polymethacrylate , Propylene Glycol , Polyquaternium-7 , Cocamide MEA , Glycol Distearate , Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Triethanolamine , DMDM Hydantoin , Methylparaben , Propylene Glycol , Propyl Paraben , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Green No. 3 Cl 42053 , Yellow No. 5 Cl 19140

@MzSwift when will it be long enough to braid?

@Chioniso
Honestly, I started wearing my hair braided at the length you are now. I put in braid and twist extensions for a couple of months. My hair grew well and felt more soft and moisturized than when it was loose. With the weather changing, you might be able to find a style you like. They will allow your scalp to breathe a little better than the wigs.

Or you could try to cornrow extension hair into yours to wear underneath your braids.

momi you are right, it is very dry - what method do you use to steam your hair?

I've used some of everything to be honest - whatever conditioner I was hooked on at the time

Yesterday I used the Argon one and only conditioner from Sally's it worked really well. Basically whatever I have on hand.

I am mostly repeating what Ive learned here and from my own experiences with ORS Creamy Aloe so if im wrong dont shoot me lol

1. Many shampoos with aloe listed as an active ingredient are clarifying shampoos
2. it is strong enough to close the cuticles and neutralize relaxer that is in your hair. which tells me that its pretty strong. you shouldnt use just any old shampoo to neutralize, right? you need one with a low ph to close your cuticles. unless you are engaging in heavy duty DCing afterwards, closed cuticles before even applying conditioner could be problematic

just my two cents. also, is your hair/scalp in need of so much cleansing? i am right behind you. i BC'd March 19th and im letting it grow back out natural right now. i dont have a lot of hair. but my last go around with a TWA, i rarely needed to shampoo. even with exercising and everything, just wetting it in the shower kept it from getting a smell or becoming itchy. again, im not pointing fingers or criticizing or anything. just saying.

as for 'cones, look for words with "cone" as the last four letters. and if you arent sure, type it up in google. i usually just pay attention to things like dimethicone or cyclomethicone that are high up in the list. do you have any heat protectants? if so, look at their ingredients. heat protectants are mostly 'cones i believe
