Did ya'll know about this?? Apparently the supposed founder of sisterlocks sued the lady of nappylocs for copyright infringement. If you read the court papers, nappylocs won on the grounds that sisterlocks is not patented, trademarked or copyrighted. Also the technique of "micro dreadlocks" is not new and it's origins go waaaay back.

Basically what it all boils down to- the sisterlock method is nothing new and no one should feel they have to pay this to get micro locs. The technique claimed to have been invented by the founder of sisterlocks was not in fact invented by her. The nappylocs founder provides the same instruction on how to do "sisterlocs" for a much cheaper price.

I ran across this in doing my research for sisterlocks and was surprised to stumble upon this. From what I can gather, nappylocs produces the same results as sisterlocks but only much cheaper. Is this true?

What do you know about this??? Any thoughts, opinions??

ETA: in doing further research, the nappylocs vs sisterlock- nappylocs appears to be the same technique, just waaayy cheaper. Nappylocs also gives you the option to make locs of anysize: small, medium, large etc. Here's the link to both websites. You be the judge.

Had no idea. I have always wanted to learn how to do Sisterlocks but just couldn't fathom the price considering I have used tools to do dreadlocks on my son.

Let me go and check out nappylocks.

Myy friend got SL's about 4 years ago and she told me the certification process of the locers and how your supposed to only go to them and use a special toll and blah, blah, blah.

After hearing all that and the price, I got the feeling that the "inventor" of SL's was trying to make it exclusive and keep people going back to the "locing techs".

I suppose that's fine, but with something like locs, you can't do that. They have been around forever and many people use the small locing process that SL's use.

I really don't know what to think- i was soo in love with the sisterlocks and now I kinda feel like it's a big rip off. I mean before reading this article I was thinking in order to get sisterlocks, i had to go to a certified sisterlock technician and so on & so forth. Now, I'm just confused.

Wow, I thought this was a joke.

nope, it's not a joke- unfortunately.
Me too. It seems silly.

It may seem silly, but in reading the court documents - it's about $$$$. The "founder" of sisterlocks is trying to monopolize the market doing a technique she claims to have created but in all actuality, she did not. I guess the biggest part was her claim that the lady who sells "nappylocs" products stole her idea & products which was proven wrong in the case.

I'm still researching. I don't know what I'm going to do now.

I agree. $1200 to learn how to do sisterlocks is kind of steep but the program does provide you with a listing on their site and some other stuff if you get certified through them. What I don't like is them bogarding(sp) the technique as if they invented it & then attaching a huge markup on the service. I don't think that's right. But, then again- some of us are willing to pay a pretty penny when it comes to hair care. It all comes down to supply & demand. I guess I can't hate on the sister cuz she used her knowledge to her advantage.

Well I haven't read anything on this, so I won't judge too harshly. It just seemed silly that someone would try to patent a hairstyle (that they didn't invent) and try to keep others from using it.

I didn't want to jump to conclusions either- but feel free to read the court papers, documents, etc and come to your own assessment. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts after you take a look. Thanks for your input!!!

The proprietor of sisterlocks is a damn fool for not getting her paper work in order and protecting her business.

Oh well...

Viva La Nappylocs!

I think the sisterlocks are beautiful, but install plus ongoing maintenance made it financially incomprehensible for me to ever consider it.

She couldn't get paperwork done because she didn't create the technique. She just gave it a new name & made it very popular!!!

I hope nappylocs are thicker than those worm looking thin sistalocs. LOL

You can get nappylocs in various sizes: micro, small, medium, or large. I think there are 5 different sizes you can get. It's all a matter of personal choice. I like sisterlocs & nappylocs, but am just a little intimidated by the permanency of them.

I looked at the first link. I still can't understand suing someone for using a technique that you didn't even create. But money makes people do strange things. Maybe sisterlocks thought the threat of suing would be enough to stop nappylocks. She might not have even considered if her case was winnable. It's probably a good thing that sisterlocks lost.

I agree with you totally. I think we should all be able to educate each other as we want to on technique because there will always be those of us who choose to get our hair done rather than doing it ourselves. And, how can you really patent a hairstyle?? Just imagine how much money we owe somebody in Africa for the various braid styles we rock? lol.

If you look further into the PDF, you'll see parts of the SL book that depicts the locking patterns. There's a wealth of information on the web regarding starting micro-locks. I've been researching too. Braidlocs provide the same micro-loc look as well and way cheaper. Here's a few sources to explore loc method alternatives.

All time favorite Sisterlock Rebel NubianLockedPrincess, here's her blog site, there she'll explain the interlocking pattern and don't forget to watch her YTube vidz! http://nubianlockedprincessnyc.blogspot.com/

Back in the Ancient Times, those women of a dark hue, large lips, wide nose and ferrelled hair (afro) were the beauty standard. Most paintings of her and stone statues are hidden in private museums and in the basement of public ones. However, there was one consistency that you'll notice when you're fortunate enough to come by one, the hair is in locks, small, big large, etc., of course you already know about the variations in braiding and conrowing, but seldom do we realize why the European woman began to wear wigs with the hair stacked up, 'cos that was how her Teacher's hair was naturally. ;)

wow!! I never thought about that correlation. Makes me really think about where the ideal of what's beautiful really comes from... possibly it goes back further than what I realize.

Thanks for the info you provided on the micro-locs too - it is wonderful information.

She didn't even trademark the name sisterlocks, which makes the whole arguement of who can install sisterlocks moot.

again, all i can say is wow! I wonder if the installers who paid $1200.00 to learn this supposed "original" technique know anything about this. I know i would be made as all get out if I found something out like this after the fact. I can hear myself calling her right now with a whole lot of questions.

I would agree. My roommate wanted SL but she didn't want to pay all that money so she just got small locs started. They look the same. I've also seen other people with small locs that look the same. IDK why they're acting like it's something new.

I'm glad I did the research. I seriously considering getting them, but have since changed my mind. My mom is going to get them though, and thanks to finding out there isn't a real difference between micro locs & sisterlocs my mom is going to save a lot of money getting them done.

I don't know why they act like they're something new either, i certainly thought they were until i found this out.
