I learned that hair needs protein and moisture. I know now all I was doing before was putting junk in my head after washing because I thought all conditioners were the same. I learned that you DON'T have to trim your ends often for it to grow, and you DON'T have to get a relax every 5 weeks like the hairdressers all told me.

....The rest....I think Iknow...but I have no idea...lol but this hair journey is just beginning :drunk:

LHCF has taught me:

- learn from the mistakes of others
- read threads designed to provide information about hair
- pre pooing and oil rinses are good habits :drunk:
- my hair does not need alot of protein :nono: (my diet is high in protein)
- that black women are beautiful! :yep:

Great thread for reflection!!! Thanks!!

I've learned:
  • Protective styles and stretching is key to MY hair growth/retaining length
  • My hair just wants to be left alone or else it WON'T grow as fast.
  • I HAVE to treat my 4b/a hair like a the original Constitution document, no matter what I am doing to it.
  • My hair will grow...growth aids or not!
  • Keep my scalp super dee duper clean...even though I don't see dandruff doesn't mean that it is clean 100%.
  • PATIENCE is the key to this journey...I hate that!!!:wallbash:

-I learned that low and high pony tails daily are the reason why I've been missing sections of the back of my hair throughout the years.

-Vatika oil on the scalp and Qhemet heavy cream on ends are a good combination.

-I learned that I should buy products at stores w/ a return policy so I don't wind up throwing money away.

-Lye relaxers are best for my hair

-I learned that henna is not for me and it's the worst thing I can do to my hair when going through a dry spell, it just makes it worse.

I've learned so much in the two months I've been here:

1) using oil is not moisturing
2) I don't need a stylist to grow my hair
3) to balance protein and moisture
4) deep conditioning is very important
5) all products are not the same
6) I'm a closet PJ
7) half wigs are my friend
8) pre-pooing and oil rising is good
9) I can have healthy, long beautiful hair
10) there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum!

Thanks Ladies!!!!!!!

In 2007 I've learned:

1. If I'm good to my hair, it'll be good to me.
2. I love the Dominicans
3. How to successfully stretch my relaxers (12 wks +)
4. My hair loves water
5. My ends love jbco
6. There's nothing special about Aveda Smooth Infusion poo:nono:
7. My naps wont kill me
8. I hate bunning every day, but it's good for my hair
9. My nape needs extra tlc
10. Did I already tell you that I love the Dominicans?
11. My hair deserves to be washed by somebody else at least twice a mth

Unfortunately, i'm still trying to figure out what works best for my hair but...

1. the dominicans are a not whats up for me. not even just the roots. my hair is too dry and fragile. it will just snap off. :nono:

2. My time frame for relaxers is 8-10 weeks. no more, no less

3. My hair does not like being washed frequently. it dries out. its prob best for me to wash w/shampoo no more than once a week

4. My hair likes thick heavy moisturizers and oils

5. Heat or no heat, without the proper product mix/ styling techniques my dry fragile hair will snap off with a quickness even just from finger combing.

6. i learned the hard way to never go in for a relaxer w/ tangled dry 11 wks of new growth. I will always have my hair in a state where it is easy to comb through when i go for a relaxer.

7. braiding my hair in plats w/ moisturizers and oil while damp is the best way for me to air dry.

I learned

1. I have to spend more time finding staples
2. My hair has a mind of its own and fighting it is useless - the hair will always win lol
3. My hair responds well to some heat
4. I need better hair tools
5. My hair is not a big fan of most shampoo's
6. I don't need hair color , my hair color changes naturally with the seasons
7. My hair will continue to grow irregardless of what I do. I can do things to encourage faster growth though.
8. Its ok to slowly introduce natural products into my regimen
9. I spend way too much money on products.
10. My hair soaks up products

So far this year I've...

1. Officially joined this forum

2. Increased hair thickness, softness, and shine

3. Went from a little below shoulder length to APL *Yippee!*

4. Learned all about Henna, Coconut Oil, Vitamins, Deep Conditioners, Reconstructors (the whole nine yards)

5. Started relaxing my hair every three months instead of waiting too long or relaxing too frequently.

6. Learned about vitamins, scalp stimulation, and how proper sleep relate to hair growth.

7. I'm pretty sure the list will go on and on, but I think you get the picture,

LHCF has taught me:

- that black women are beautiful! :yep:

AMEN! I have learned so much about not just haircare, but the overall beauty of us sistahs. In a world that constantly denigrates us, it has been so powerful for me to learn to embrace our/my beauty. For this, I truly have to thank you all!

:bighug:

I first joined this site in the beginning of 2007 and I have learned sooooo much about haircare, it's ridiculous!

Here are the highlights:
  • oil does not moisturize the hair, it seals it shut
  • deep conditioning is essential
  • water is not de debil -- frequent co-/washes benefit my hair
  • leave-in conditioners (especially Matrix Biolage) are the bomb!
  • protect those ends to retain length!
  • baggying
  • Type 4 hair CAN grow beyond SL . . . .
That's all I can think of right now.
