I haven't posted in a while but I was wondering if anyone has these in with extensions? I'm very interested in having these done but was inquiring about several things 1) Can you do it with relaxed hair?, 2) Does this aid in hair growth aka are there problems with breakage, 3) How do you care for these, any regimes? and 4) How do you know if the person doing it is doing it right? Sorry for all the q's but I haven't found much info online. TIA, you beautiful people!

We were having a discussion that included this style (I think this is the same style) in this thread African Beauty Secrets . Nonie posted the "how to" for anyone interested.

We were calling it threaded hair/dreadlocks. Is that the same?

Hey! I had these done a few yrs ago and I loved them!!! I am relaxed and was having problems w/breakage on the right side of my head. Well, having these braids greatly aided in my hair growing. I had NO breakage during or after having silky dreads. And they looked beautiful. Right after I took them out, I permed w/no problems whatsoever.

I went to a hair braiding salon in Philly to have them done, but I guess you can do them yourself if you're talented enough. When I had them, I washed my hair normally, but used an all in one poo and conditioner. I did not put in oils or anything special on my new growth (this was my first time ever having braids so I didn't know about any protocol.). Let us know if you get them!!!

Not sure if we're thinking of the same thing, but I got my hair braided years ago at Khamit Kinks in New York. They had a picture of what they called silky dreads and they were beautiful. I decided against them however because the stylist told me that in order to acheive that look, they braid the hair with extensions, then somehow wind additional hair around each braid to give it the "silky dread" look. She said that unless they're used to wearing braids, folks find it really heavy. I didn't think my edges could handle it.

.

But it was all good b/c the braids finally settled and I felt like a beauty once again...

silky dreds are when you braid the hair like in regular extensions, then you would take some more extensions hair and wrap it around the braid tightly....silky dreds have been out 4 a while, a few friends of mine have had them...

Are you talking about wrapped dreads? And hey hi :)

I have had them in the past and took care of them the same way as regular braids except I liked to use a little bit of warm air from the blowdryer just to keep them dry.

You have to watch out when you're taking them out so you don't wind up cutting any of your own hair.

Mine lasted about 6 weeks or so before I got tired of them. HTH :)

Hey there! Thanks for bumping this up, I ended up getting these done a couple years ago but I should really get it done again. I still have dred extensions I need to make use of too. I believe when I had them in though I basically used Surge mixed with a little castor oil twice daily and washed once or twice weekly.
