Should I stay or should I go?

Hi, ladies,

Finally, after 4 years, I have found a hairstylist who is into hair health, is knowledgeable about hair care, doesn't do a hard sell of products, and trims instead of cuts.

I took a chance on going to a J.C. Penny salon because I was so dissatisfied with the Deep Brilliance relaxer that was applied to my hair in a pricey salon. I figured that at least at J.C. Penny, there'd be more relaxer options. My appointment for a touchup was yesterday, and the experience was fabulous. My stylist actually sat down and TALKED to me about my hair goals, my hair history and chemicals I've used. She is studying to be a trichologist also and looked at my scalp and mentioned that on my left side I have a little discoloration that should be checked out and might be exacerbated by a strong chemical. She also encourages her clients to bring products THEY like and she will use them. She loves Elucence and she says that if requested, she will get Elucence relaxers and apply them (the preferred relaxer of choice in this particular J.C. Penny salon is Mizani sensitive scalp. No one there likes the Deep Brilliance relaxer, they say it's much too weak a formulation for 4a/b hair.) She also refuses to blow-dry hair, only does roller sets and doobies. My touchup was painless, she brushed out my curls, wrapped me, and I was good to go.

The problem is . . . she's leaving. She and her husband are splitting and she's moving out of state in September. She says that she will be going back and forth between her new home and Miami to accommodate her clients, but she's not sure what the schedule will be yet.

My question is - this was my first experience with her. I loved it, and she and I clicked, but should I just cut my losses now and start looking for another stylist? I don't want to get my hair 'hooked' on her care and then have it yanked away from me. On the other hand, she is really, really good, and my hair could benefit greatly, even in those few months. I suppose I don't know whether to choose limited time with a great stylist or going hunting for a stylist who will be here for awhile. Advice, please?

I would go to her for as long as she is willing to keep coming back to that JCPenny's. That may not be long though so I would still look for someone else to do my hair. How far is Miami from you? Some good hair care is better than none. She might even be willing since she is leaving to start showing some tricks so that you can do your hair yourself in her absence.

I think maybe you should stick with her. When you find a good stylist stick with them. I've been to so many different stylists and it took a serious toll on my hair. I've only had one good stylist besides the one I have now and I don't know what happened to her. But I went from this stylist to that one and my hair got damaged. Luckily I have a good one now and I'm sticking with her.

I would go to her for as long and you can, AND if she's that cool I'd also ask her if she wouldn't mind recommending someone in her absence. You could see her when she's in town, and if she has a rec you could see them occasionally if you need to....
