Should I relax my daughter's hair

Don't relax. My Mom relaxed my sisters hair when she was five and now at age 7 we are completely natural again. It was a waste of time. All it did was make her hair break more easily.

I can't tell you what to do about styling but relaxing is not the way to go if it is already breaking. Maybe she needs more conditioning and that will help alleviate some of the breakage that she is experiencing.

I am not an advocate of chemically enhancing our children, if at all necessary, and this includes the application of relaxers. However, if you must relax, I read on the Motions haircare website that a child should be at least five years of age before a relaxer is applied. It did not explain why age five is the magical year, and perhaps someone on the LHCF can explain.

A healthier alternative, IMHO, would be to have someone press your daughter's hair. My mother pressed my hair from the age of two to about age 22, and I had nice, thick, healthy shoulder-length hair.
