I was just wondering how you went about finding your stylist because I was reading your hair care regime and you seem to have such a great relationship with her. How long have you been going to her? I went to Penney's yesterday for a hair consultation because I have come to realize that I just can't do it all by myself. I've been relaxing my own hair for years and I'm obviously doing something wrong because I cut my hair back in Sept. '02 and it's no longer now than it was when I first cut it. I wash it every week, take vitamins, relax every 12 weeks... you name it. Anyway, when I went to see the stylist yesterday I asked her what could she do to aid in my hair growth and her response was,"I can't grow your hair. What you'll need to do is start by getting a trim every 4-6 weeks." My fiance was with me and he told me later after we left that he started to come back and sit with me but as soon as he heard her say that he turned around because he knew then that she wasn't right for me. I'm at my wits end because I have been doing this thing for about a year now and I have hardly seen a change in my hair at all. Please help!

I know you asked for Sherry and I am hardly a substitute, but I would say you've done two good things;

1. Recognize that it's time to start getting salon help for a while til you're back on track
2. Walk away when it's clear a stylist doesn't share your hair philosophies.

If your hair is at a stand-still cutting it is not going to make it longer. What your looking for is someone who is going to address the problem of breakage, because that's what seems to be going on. Are you over-processed? wearing protective styles? Losing hair during wet/dry comb-out. Perhaps the relaxer you're using is really hard on your hair. Well I'm sure SherryLove will help, but there must be more that one JCP... Good Luck.

hey spicee.... it's been a while since i've heard from you.

yes, i do have a good relationship with my stylist. Praise God....it took me 16 years to find this wonderful person.......believe it or not, i came across her by default..... the girl who was doing my hair for a while happened to be out and my stylist opted to do my hair in her absence. the rest is history...every other stylist i went to wanted to do what they wanted to do with my hair......i could not stand it. i am a very picky person... so i kept going from stylist to stylist...my grandma would always complain about how my hair looked as if i did it myself and how i pay those people to do nothing...

girl,,,i know what you mean...i agree that a skilled professional should be doing your touch ups........and a good stylist enhances your haircare regimen...i am sorry you had that experience. please do not give up on looking for a good stylist for yourself. he or she is out there somewhere. what hair care prods do you use?????do you deep condition??? do you keep your ends moisturized?????do you protect your hair while sleeping????if you do not already, try massaging your scalp five or more mins per day. this is good for increasing the circulation in the scalp and possibly helping with growth.

Hi Henrilou,

Thanks for responding. Any advice is needed and appreciated. I guess it would help if I explained my situation a little more. I had a baby a year ago and although I am not experiencing anymore breakage ( I was but it finally stopped) I am still shedding more than I think is normal. I'm not over processed but I would venture to say that I maybe underprocessed. My last touchup a few weeks ago I used Elasta QP mild and I barely had time to apply all of the relaxer before it started burning my scalp. For the first week after a relaxer I wear my hair down in a bob but after that week, I wash it then its in a ponytail until my next touchup. I'm in an area where there is not many black stylist.

Hey Sherrylove,

You're right-long time, no hear! Thanks for responding. Girl, there is so much going on I barely no where to start. I am a very picky person, also, that's why it has taking me so long to finally realize that I may need a stylist. I was just too upset after leaving that shop yesterday because the things she said she could do for my hair I can and have been doing myself. My hair is VERY dry and that's the main reason I went to her because I thought she would be able to give me some type of diagnosis. I don't know if I need a stylist or a doctor. Anyway, she said the reason my hair was so dry is because of protein loss. I don't know about that because here is what I did after I did my last touchup: After applying the relaxer I put on a plastic cap and let it sit for about 5 minutes. After that I smoothed it with a wide tooth comb then rinsed. Then I applied a neutralizing conditioner (Motions Oil Moisturizer Protein Cond.) and let it sit for about 5 minutes then rinsed. Then I shampooed 3x, once with Elucence Neutralizing Shamp., once with Mizani Puriphying Shamp., and once with Elucence Moisture Balancing Shamp. (I beginning to realize that using products from different lines may be part of the problem). After that I did an ACV rinse. Then I did a 2 minute reconstructor (Aphogee) followed by a deep cond.(speaking of deep conditioners, what kind does your stylist use?)I don't have a sit-under hair dryer so I usually warm a towel in the microwave for a minute, put on a plastic cap then wrap my hair with the warm towel. I moisturize my hair every day with Infusium mixed with castor, ylang ylang, rosemary, spearmint, and sage oils. I can't say that I protect my ends at night. I normally spray my hair with the Infusim mix and sleep on a satin pillowcase. Please look at my routine and tell me what it is that I am doing wrong.

I wanted to add that I have decided to start with trying products from one line instead of about 20 like I have in my closet. I wrote down the names of the products that you mentioned in your regime. I will be visiting the vitamine shoppe as soon as I find out everything that I need. So far I have:
Shampoo: Island Natural, Swimmers, & Jojoba/Aloe
Leave-in Conditioner: Giovanni Direct Stay-in

I don't know what clarifying shampoo or deep conditioner you are using, yet. So, is that it? Is that all you do for your hair? Do you spray on a leave-in conditioner daily? If not, what do you do for a daily moisturizer?

because you mentioned your hair is very dry, I would recommend the GPB or Jojoba & Aloe conditioner and the White Camellia & Jasmin shampoo for your hair....you may also want to add two(2) tsps of aubrey's aloe vera gel to the giovanni...

my stylist uses aubrey's products on my hair...

is your relaxer lye or no lye??????

Sherrylove,

Thanks for the info but I still don't know what kind of deep conditioner you are using. Also, do you use the Giovanni daily as a moisturizer or are you using some other type of daily moisturizer? In other words, what is your daily hair regime?

I'm currently using a lye relaxer.
