She blamed it on my mama!

So i was just thinking of smthg my old beautician told me and i wanted your opinion. I was complaining about my hair and growth issues and how improperly my mother would care for my hair and apply relaxer to my WHOLE head as a child- etc. and my beautician said that often when your parents screw up your hair when your young, it never recovers. that your hair and scalp and follicles are developing and if they are horribly mistreated at a young age, ur growth can be stumped :nono:. so i wondered, do you think this is another hair myth or really true? they say coffee and cigarettes stump cell growth, so why not harsh pulling and relaxers?.....

it is quite possible... some recover and some don't. that's why you're not supposed to relax pre-adolescents, to give their follicles time to develop and mature.

Actually she's not lying. It's taught in most beauty school, That's why you aren't supposed to give a child a relaxer under the age of 9 because they are in their early development stages and it affects them later.

The hair can recover but its not always an easy process and it also depends how damage the hair/scalp/follicles are, especially if the relaxer wasn't properly applied.

But if for instance the mother was applying them correctly the child would have a better chance of not having such adverse effects occur to their hair/scalp etc.

My mom was horrible - i know she applied it wrong. she still abuses her own hair and thinks i'm 'too gentle' when i'm helping her flat iron it. how many years recovery time do you think is necessary b/f u give up?

Yeah, I've heard from numerous people that you shouldn't relax a girls hair until after they start their period or it will ruin their hair. I can't say that I know of any girls who was permed as a child who has super healthy/long hair. This may not only be because of perming at a young age, it could also be because usually people who do that to their girls are not very patient with natural hair and may not care for it gently like it needs to be taken care of. I'm not saying having healty/long hair can't happen though, I believe anything is possible.:yep:

Its funny this topic is coming up. I'm a mentor for a 8 yr old little girl who was neglected by her mom and now lives with her grandmother. Her grandmother was telling me how bad her hair was when she first came to live with her because her mom had been relaxing her hair since she was 4!!!!!! and was leaving it in too long. It's healthy now but her gram said she had to do alot of work and is glad she got to it in time.

i dunno... i hate to keep comparing relaxing to smoking :perplexed but just like some people smoke for a few years in college and then quit, but certain effects from the drug stay with them for years... whereas some people chain smoke for decades and quit and their health does a 180 quickly. different for different people.

i will say the sooner you start doing HEALTHY practices (whether you relax or not) the better your chances of hair recovery. :yep:
