Good morning ladies,

Im not new to LHCF but I'm new to being natural. I'm so sad and in need of you all help and support. I BC in May of 2014 and I was doing fine no heat, all natural products and I only touched my hair. Recently like 2 days I wanted to surprise my husband and get my hair pressed and something bi side wanted to see how long it grew so when she asked for a trim I hesitated at first but she Insisted because my ends were matted. I didn't think a trim would hurt but boy was I wrong my hair looks so much shorter and my curls aren't popping anymore when it was wet it was thick, curly and so pretty now it just looks puffy when it's wet and most of all my hair is uneven. What can I do? I feel like all my hard work just went down the drain.

Did she trim too much? Do you think you have heat damage? Try a good protein treatment to strengthen your curls. Protein is supposed to help slowly return the curls pattern.

No there isn't any heat damage and I definitely did a protein treatment yesterday when I reverted my hair it's just shorter then it was...

My main question is do you have to get your hair trim in the first year of growing your hair out?

One thing I learned over the years is to stay away from stylists for trims and stay away from the marcel stove or pressing in the salon. Do both at home.

Now for some solutions/ideas:
1. Go to another professional to even out the cut while your hair is wet IF the shape when wet is important to you.
2. Clarify and do consistent protein treatments for a few months and maybe your curls will come back.

If the above fails, you will have to trim the stringy areas or let your hair grow out.
Painful to hear I know, I've been there. Reached MBL and bam! heat damage. Back to zero.

Wishing you the best....

That's relative. If your hair has tactile, chemical or heat damage, it does need to be cut in the first year.

It sounds like you took very good care of your hair, so you shouldn't have much damage at all that needs to be trimmed off. However, a cut every 6 months doesn't hurt anyone.

If your curls aren't springing anymore like they were before, it could be because the weight is not there anymore to hold the curl. I would try more holding or curl defining products in the meantime to get the hang back.

It depends on the health of your hair. There is no one size fits all trim schedule. Ladies with coarse strong strands can go a year or more between trims and some fine haired ladies have to trim every few months.

I know this is cliche, but it WILL grow back. Watch YouTube and learn how to trim your own hair to avoid being disappointed again. I had a run in with a scissor happy stylist in October and I'm still recovering.

It definitely sounds like heat damage. Be patient and baby your hair with protein and moisturizing DC's. I recommend the Sally's Argan Oil Reconstructing Mask, it's an excellent balance between moisture and protein.
While some heat damage is completely irreversible, I do believe you can regain some of the curl pattern/boing with TLC.

She cut too much. No more stylist trims. I don't care what they say. Don't do it. They almost ALWAYS trim too much. Read this forum and see all the stylist horror stories that prove me right.

Keep up with regular protein treatments weekly. Follow with a moisturizing conditioner. Every week. If you have mild heat damage, it can be reversed.

Put your hair in a bun and wear it up most of the time until it grows out.

Don't go to another stylist for a trim. I don't see a reason to take off more hair unless there are spilt ends and irreparable damage..... Sorry, I personally don't think that's the answer...IMHO ....take care of your hair at home. Spend the next three to six months growing out your hair.

Watch you tube video like crazy over the next three months. Get a cheap wig. Practice trimming the wig while it's on your head.

Then go buy some good scissors and trim your own hair from now on. (Don't touch the wig with the good scissors. Use some cheap ones for that)

I just BC on 12/19 and I plan to trim at least monthly for the first six months because I believe in scab hair and I believe I have it. I already went in for a trim and she cut too little...

..you have received great advice and I have nothing to add other than if all else fail, try a 100% all natural clay. It designed to cleanse, detox and is known to help define curls.

Sent from my SM-N900V using LHCF

Thanks ladies but I must say there was never heat damage done to my hair my curl pattern isn't lost I just felt once it got trimmed it wasn't as curly as it was before

I think a lot of the ladies here have given some good explanations but if you say it isn't heat damage... maybe that's just your texture when it's shorter or your hair may be dry from the straightening. Try a deep conditioning or bentonite clay treatment..
