Seriously though....why do braids...

ITCH? Seriously....Anyone know the science behind that fact? My hair never ever itches so much. Man, does it feel good to spray my s-curl mixture with a little dew and some rosemary oil and massage it into my scalp. I'm going to be going through cases of this stuff!

You have presented an interesting question. /images/graemlins/scratchchin.gif For me it's been one of those things I just expect and deal with. Hmmm...maybe you're on to something? /images/graemlins/crystalball.gif

Braids usually itch because of the chemicals in the hair you are using to braid your hair with. Commercial hair (human and especially synthetic) are processed with chemicals that can be irritating to the scalp and drying to the hair. I used to wear braids a lot and found the best way to deal with the itch is to wash them (gently). Too much braid spray will build up on your hair and cause it to tangle when you take your braids out. You might also want to try different brands of hair. Manufacturers use different chemicals and amounts of chemical to process hair.

you took the words right out of my mouth, alexa! i've only used synthetic hair, and i believe the chemical used to dye the hair is what irritates my scalp. so i wash the braids the first day i have them. once i do that, the itching goes away. i aslo wash the braids either weekly or every other week while i wear them. i think it's important to keep your scalp clean in addition to keeping your hair moisturized with braids. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

leshia, you might also be aggravating the problem if you're using the S-Curl stuff directly on your scalp. glycerine is GREAT for the hair, but it can really make the scalp itch...

Maybe you're onto something...while I'm testing out some different brands, I think I may try to rinse the hair first before using it. Man, I wish I had asked this before I braided it!

I thought about that too. I think it may very well be a combination of what both you and Alexa have said thus far because I know that I've been using the Scurl spray directly on my scalp when it wasn't braided and it didn't itch like this! I didn't want to wash them so soon because it seems to loosen them a bit but I think I may have to before I rip these things out!

Adrienne and Alexa are definitely right. I used to ITCH like mad /images/graemlins/mad.gif whenever I wore braids, but I rinsed mine in warm water mixed with apple cider vinegar and then rinsed again and I never had the itching problem.

I don't know if it will have the same effect if you rinse it off with just water, you might need a lil something to make the film on the hair budge.

Diva,
What would you suggest seeing as how the hair is already on my head? I'm desperate. I wound up rinsing my hair at 11pm last night and went to bed with a towel around my head and it still itches and burns today...not quite as bad but still...*pouts* What was I thinking? It's like having a baby when you consider putting in braids--you forget about the pain of prior braids!!! /images/graemlins/nuts.gif

Oh my Lord. I've never had braids, but I know I'll never get them now. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif I don't have any children, but I've heard a zillion stories about having a baby.

When I used the synthetic hair my scalp would be totally irritated. I didn't think that would happen with the human hair though. I know they use chemicals on the synthetic. It could also be the products you use and certain ingredients in the products may not good for your scalp. I would try a different shampoo and see what happens.

i know you didn't ask me, but i think you should just wash your hair rather than continue suffering... /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Having a baby and having braids are not comparable. You know your hair is getting damaged if you feel pain when braiding. Slight tugging is acceptable, but pain means damage.

I have never had a baby but I would sit and get braided for 5 days rather than have one day of menstrual cramps.

I agree with Adrienne. Can you do the acv rinse with the braids on? You don't necessarily have to take out the braids, do you?

I use kanekalon braids and I don't pre-treat them. I have never had itching problems though.

Actually all commercial hair, even human hair, has chemicals in it. They actually take raw human hair and first perm it. After they perm it, they put some kind of preservative over the hair so that it doesn't tangle while it's packaged. That's why the hair in the pack and the hair after it is washed never looks or acts the same. (ANd that's why the hair in the pack has a long shelf-life, but the hair you are wearing may last up to 3 months)

I personally do not use a pre-rinse. A regular ol' shampoo is usually good enough to remove the chemical residue after about 2 days to a week after I have had them put in. SOme stylists say that you should wait for the braid to "set", but I figure if I wash the braids and they unravel, the braider didn't do a very good job.

I defninately agree, too, that braids should never hurt. If someone is putting them in too tight, tell them right away. That's why a lot of people have receeding hairlines after wearing braids for too long (or wearing too much hair on the braid). I don't think asprin is a great product for any hairstyle.

I think I put that in a way that seriously scared her. I only meant to say that if you're not learned in the areas of treating the human hair before you use it to braid it could lead to some serious itching! I hadn't realized that those who have not had babies would see a little more to that comment. I'll try not to exaggerate, which will be hard since I am a little bit o' drama. *smirking* After all, I've had two babies and this itching I can definitely deal with!

I know nothing of ACV rinses...anybody want to give me a ratio of ACV to water? I don't understand why mine itch so much yet others have no problems with them..I washed last night and this morning and will probably do so again and again until this itching goes away. I may have to reconsider braiding again. It's a shame cuz I did them so pretty this time! /images/graemlins/lick.gif

No, they don't hurt, I know how tight to put them in, they just itch...I don't think I'll braid again after this is all said and done. I enjoy the conditioning washes every two to three days to much to not be doing them anyway...

I know men that have had their hair braided w/o extensions and their heads itch too. I always told them it was from product build-up, improper rinsing or not washing their hair at all. I remember this one guy with cornrows who played basketball all day and didn't wash or rinse his hair when he got home. He had the nerve to complain about itching when we were at the club that night! It was funny--he didn't want to mess up his hair so instead of scratching his head he would just pat it real hard. He looked he was hitting himself in the head. My friends and I called him 'Rainman'. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
