I do my own trims - I just cut them as I do my roller set. I've been doing it this way for about 15-20 years. I get really nice shears (normally about $65-$75)

The only tip I have is to make sure you are using hair cutting shears that are good and sharp (to give you crisp ends, rather than more jagged ones). No regular scissors (probably not sharp enough).

Sorry, no real tip but... beware of hairdressers trimming. I've been to 3 different ones on my last visits and they have been doing this "cut upwards" at the ends so it doesn't look as blunt. This, IMO has caused split ends. Beware
