I'm sitting here at 6 months post and thinking I'll go a little longer. I have not stepped foot into a salon in quite a while. But at the same time, I wonder if I would really be able to relax my own hair with so much new growth.

Have any of you self-relaxed after a lengthy stretch? If so, tips and advice please. :)

^^Thanks, but I am more interested in how much new growth someone feels that they can comfortably relax on their own (self-relax) without having to enlist the help of a stylist. (not necessarily trying to found out how much new growth individuals have at the end of a stretch)

Yeah I know. That was answered in a few comments on the thread and from what was said it was around 2 inches.

Hi SG...I know that Tracyee has done this...I think she has the details on her K.I.S.S. site.

I would be comfortable relaxing at 20 weeks, because IMO, if you go longer, it might take your longer (when applying) to get good results, and you might have to use super strength if you want bone straight. At the salons, I believed the longer u stretch your relaxers the more relaxer you will need, so stylists would charge you more because of the amount of new growth u have, so I don't go pass 20 weeks, I ususally relax at 12 weeks, might go to 16 weeks this time, I have new growth already and I just passed my one month, so at 20 weeks, my new growth would be crazy. Anything pass 20 weeks I would go to a stylist, but I would make sure I have some money, cuz they be trippin if you have so much of new growth.

It depends on what percentage of straightness you want. Trayee wants a more underprocessed (textlax) look, so it is fine for her to do her own retouch. MsKibibi is another great example. She applies the relaxer to her MBL hair, but there is no smoothing involved.

If however you like to obtain straightness more than 50%-60%, you should go to the salon, think svyler2. With long hair, there is a greater chance of ripping the hair and the back is doubly more difficult to apply and smooth.

yes, the salon would treat a long term stretch as a virgin relaxer where cost is concerned, but it is still less than the cost of a retouch every 6-8 weeks - just to keep things in perspective.

The most I relaxed is 5 months and that is b/c I was in braids.. Probably wont do that again.. The most I will relax is 3 months.. After 3 months my hair don't look as good anymore, well not as polished as I would like it to look..
