I was wondering if any of you apply a prep (protect) to your scalp prior to relaxing and if so, what do you prefer to use?

I dont base my scalp with anything. But I if you're concerned with burning I would suggest using this:

Affirm® Gentle Assurance® Sensitive Scalp Protector
A unique base creme designed to protect the skin
adjacent to the hairline areas and to enhance the
comfort of scalp-sensitive clients. Suitable for use
with relaxer and permanent wave treatments.

Provide the client maximum scalp comfort, allowing
time for optimal straightening.

Features superior spreadabilty for maximum ease of use
and control.

Compatible with all sodium hydroxide, lithium
hydroxide (no-lye, no-mix) and guanidine hydroxide
relaxers.

Contains no irritants.

I only apply oil or vaseline to my hairline and around my nape. Growing up, my mom never based my scalp. I didn't even know what it was until a few years ago! :ohwell: I also put conditioner on my ends to protect them from the relaxer :yep:

I've never put anything on my scalp, prior to relaxing, and I never burn. However, I do saturate my previously-relaxed ends with oil and put vaseline around my hairline and ears.

I'm thinking about self-relaxing so this is a great thread. I had a stylist once put oil sheen throughout my head prior to relaxing, but is it not mandatory? I thought you HAD to base your scalp with something.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't... If i know I've been playing and scratching I'll use an oil or vaseline around my edges and on my ears. I also put some oil or conditioner on my ends just in case.

Some ladies add Olive Oil to their relaxer. Me, myself, I base my hairline and nape with Vaseline:yep: I also never leave the relaxer in my hair longer than the time allows for my thick coarse hair.

I put vaseline in an applicator bottle and put it on my scalp, nape, edges, and ears. I don't always do it, but I make sure to at least do the last three.

because my hair has a color on it ,I apply cholesterol to my hair, olive oil to my relaxer and vaseline around my edges.

Same here. I tried basing my whole head once and the relaxer didn't take well.

I base my scalp, and hairline (front, nape and sides) EVERY TIME. I part my hair into four quarters coat the strands with conditioner, Pin down three quarters and get to work on the one.

My relaxer takes just fine and I don't leave it in long either.
