I have it on my hairline.:(

The flaky itchy red blotches flare up once a week and I can't keep a cute hairstyle in my head for too long. I have to constantly wash the front of my head.

Can anyone help?

I have a family memeber that struggles with this. We are currently in the process of finding them something that will work. Have you tried the dermatologist?

Not yet. I'm going to look into one though. This is driving me nuts.

I was hoping somebody here knows some home remedies I can try first.

I have this (or use to have anyway). I was diagnoised with this condition when I was 12 years old. I had been using all types of prescription shampoos and anti-dandruff shampoos and everything inbetween! It wasnt until I stopped relaxing that it started to go away. Now I rarely get flare ups. Also I just started using Aloe Vera for my scalp and its like the problem was never there in the first place.

10 years of doctors - nothing
2 years of research and common sense - priceless.

Aloe vera on the area
Neem oil
Keeping it clean and dry (Meaning not a lot of moisture, sealing and baggying)
Get a script for derma smooth
Use natural products with no alcohol
HTH

ACV rinses can help people with dandruff problems and SD. I don't have SD but I do have really bad dandruff which causes my scalp to become itchy and sore. Regular ACV rinses has kept my scalp under control.

You have to change your diet and lifestyle. Get a humidifier. Start taking fish oil tablets. Find an oil that moisturizes but doesn't clog. I personally like avocado oil. DONT PUT A STEROID CREAM THERE! Drink lots of water. Figure out what is likely irritating your scalp. I get flareups if my hair is shampooed too much, or the shampoo has really harsh sulfates. I also get flareups if I put too much oil on my scalp or not enough. You have to figure out your body chemisty and balance it. I found though that I had to make internal changes to really see a significant improvement.

Good luck!

I had this issue. What helped me was

1. Sulfate-free shampoo (a must in my opinion) I really like BWC Rosemary Mint and Tea Tree
2. Acv rinses
3. aloe vera gel on the scalp
4. Tea tree oil

I'm also cutting out things that irritate my scalp. I really wanted to like ayurveda, but something about those powders make my scalp itch, so I'm sticking to other bars and shampoos

I have SD along with my mom and sister. If the rest of my family went to the doctor, they too would be diagnosed with it. My suggestion is to educate yourself on the condition (maybe you have already done this :) and try all remedies until you find what works for you. I have been to two dermatologists at different times. I was prescribed DermaSmooth one time (which contains mineral oil) it worked okay Another time, I was told to buy T-Sal Shampoo, which I like. Now that I live in North Carolina, the SD is not as bad as when I lived in a colder climate. If I use the T-Sal shampoo, I only apply it to my irritated area, not my whole head. That stuff is very drying. Then I use a moisturizing (sulfate free) shampoo. Conditioning after using that shampoo is very important too.

Recently, I started adding aloe vera juice and tea tree oil to my shampoo. Mix it all up in a color application bottle and apply to directly to my scalp.

I have also heard that peppermint and eucalyptus oils are good too.

I don't mess with any scalp treatment either. I try to keep my scalp as clean and clear as possible.

@KurlyNinja See I stopped relaxers since Dec. 2009, The dermatitis diminished but it never stayed completely away. I'll try some aloe vera. What brand do you use?

LaughingOctopus

I've been using Georges brand 100% pure liquid aloe Vera. I started a thread a few days ago about aloe Vera rinses. You should also check out the aloe Vera challenge I started. There are many tips that are in there as well. Hope this helps you some!

FYI - SB is a chronic (life-long) condition. Sometimes I think that it is "gone" and I slack off (especially in the summer). Then, it flares up again! When you find a combination that works, stick with it.

I even have it on my face around my laugh lines.

You may also want to try MSM. I purchase my sulfur pills at Whole Foods or from a really good vitamin store. When I take them consistently, I don't get the flaking... But when I start to slack on taking them, it comes back. You will need about two to four weeks to notice a difference. Hope this helps!

LaughingOctopus - I've also had SD for years. I went to a derm 3-4 years ago. He gave me an injection of triamcinolone in my arm and I saw results in about 3 weeks. He also gave me the same Rx as an ointment, but I didn't have to use it much. I go back only once a year because I don't experience flare-ups anymore. I also switched to a lye relaxer about 2 years ago - it's been the best decision I've made for my hair. I also started using SLS-free shampoo. Costco's Kirkland Signature is excellent if you have access to one. Good luck to you!

That neem oil looks weird.:perplexed Why did a link for lawn and garden care come up?

Lol, because Neem is a Killer...literally. It's 100% safe, and has been an Ayurvedic scalp treatment for centuries. It's a natural pesticide, and anti-fungal....it also stinks like nobody's business. :nono: Thankfully there are ways around that.

You can use 2 tbs of Neem oil in a clarifying shampoo...lather, let sit for a few mins, rinse & condition. You shouldn't be able to smell the neem oil by the time you're done.

You can prepoo with it. Lay it on your scalp, and baggy for a hour or so....if you can take the smell for that long.

You can also use the powder, which does Not stink. Make a mask with some neem powder and cheapie condish, lay it on your scalp and baggy for an hour.

I blend it into my MT mix, and DC overnight with it. I have to use a strong perfume oil with it, or it will keep waking me up at night...because it stinks.

That is the pure stuff. Neem oil stink and is very very powerful. I use very little. Most of the Neem oil in the beauty section probably contain less than an ounce in a 20 ounce bottle.

I just like to get the pure stuff whenever possible. Did I mention it stinks. Do some online research. Neem oil is insecticide

I have it too. For some reason it's been really bad lately. My edges started to thin because of it. Using Selsun Blue shampoo about 2-3 times a weeks has helped a little. I keep saying I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor, but I never get around to it.

It's also Cheaper when you buy the pure stuff. This is the one I use: http://www.amazon.com/Dyna-Gro-Neem...1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1337388517&sr=1-1

It works better than any prescription, and non-prescription scalp treatment, or shampoo that I have ever used.

My Derma prescribed Olux foam. It doesn't mess up the hair, it is applied to the scalp. Mine flares up with the different weather changes or if my stylist use a shampoo that is new. (Which she doesn't switch up on me anymore) Also, when it is really bad, they would prescribe antiabotics.

If it goes untreated it can cause hair loss since its similar to a fungus. Per Doctor.

I was looking up remedies on Google and I read that a cotton ball soaked in diluted ACV can soothe the rashes. I tried this tonight and I am so relieved the itchies and redness are gone! I will monitor usage of the ACV though, I don't know how if too much acid will affect my hair. I will be using this until I can pick up some neem and aloe vera.

This thread is the business. My sister and I both have SD, (hers to a lesser extent). I'm going to share this thread with her. Thanks for starting this thread OP!

Ooo thanks for the tip! I just had a breakout due to using a new co-cleanser that didn't work for me. I soaked it in neem after a few days of pain, and it cleared up but I think the ACV might have been better to start off with...my breakouts are Painful. :nono:

I cursed that co-cleanser for a Week!
