Now why you gotta go and post this? I'm now

What kind of board is that? Is it a racist board? It seems like it just from many of the comments.

A defense brief submitted in Alabama federal court cites numerous supposed characteristics of black hair that make treating it more “time consuming and technically demanding than fulfilling the minimal (or non-existent) conditioning needs” of the typical white customer.

I actually agree with this. Cleaning our hair is easy part, but our conditioning needs are specific, especially for those of us that are relaxed.

But, how are they charging more? What, do they have a price lists that says something like:

Wash and set : WHITE: $30 BLACK: $50

How can a stylist even open up an tell someone that they have to pay more. Well, I did have a black stylist tell me she charges me more because my hair is thick and coarse. Needless to say, I stopped going to her.

They said it was more to CLEAN out hair. Not to straighten it or condition it but to CLEAN IT. Id be with them if they said our relaxers take awhile or our braid extensions take awhile but just to CLEAN IT?!

This is sad. The story was bad enough, but the comments were crazy! It's sad that it's 2006 and there are still (many) people in this country who are completely ignorant.

Maybe something is wrong w/me, but I'm not finding this racist nor am I angered by it. I've seen black hairstylists "discriminate" against black customers with kinky hair, so maybe that is why. I remember one day I was in the chair and a girl walked in w/long natural hair and she'd come for her appointment to have it pressed. It was a Saturday. She'd been given the appt for that day but the salon owner/stylist (who was doing my hair as I sat in the chair and witnessed) would not see her b/c he said it would take "too long" to press her hair and he turned her away! Even though she'd been obviously mistakenly given that appt for that day. He said he never did presses on Saturdays b/c it takes too long. Let's be honest, y'all, pressing a natural with long hair *is* time consuming. The more time it takes to style it yes, I coudl see someone charging more b/c it interferes w/their ability to book more clients. It's like comparing doing braids vs cornrows. Braids take longer thus cost more. i think that's what the issue was. Now, if they are discriminationg against anyone black--even if their hair is relaxed and they just come in for a wash and set--now that is wrong and racist.
ETA: I'm commenting on the original article, not the comments bc/ the point is that Dillards is doing this. I'm sure there are ignorant @holes who will post racist things. Off to read the comments now...

In spite of some of the ridiculous comments, I have to agree. My hair does take longer to wash than any of my white girlfriend's hair. It has to be untangled VERY carefully to keep from tearing it out or creating more tangles. That's just another reason that I do my own hair. Because my hair is curly I have to rinse carefully and throughly to make sure it is completely clean. I take the time that many busy stylists don't or won't take to carefully detangle in sections,
rinse, deep condition, ect....

Ummm youre excluded from making any more 'my hair takes too long to style' comments! You know you have enough hair for about 6 of us :) But still thats not thier argument. They didnt say chage more for styling but just for washing.

but, who gave the thread 1 star?
A hater... Or someone who wrote one of those comments. Or someone who doesnt mind being discriminated against for having hair that they cant change... Next it will be charging us more for makeup because of the color of out skin.... Whats the argument? "Oh so many different colors... so hard to match... CHARGE THEM MORE!"

This policy is pure BS.
I can totally understand charging customers more because of length, thickness, complexity of styles, condition of the hair or for extras like deep conditioning, color, relaxers or any other kinds of special treatment.

Charging more by race is completely asinine. Look at all the heads of hair represented on this board, no one here has the exact same hair, texture, style and hair care needs as another poster and this trend can be extended to the greater black female population. Not all black people have the same hair type, thickness, length, condition and styling desires (and the same goes for non-black customers).

If black people are automatically charged more (b/c our coarse, difficult hair requires so much more attention) then an individual with a short natural looking for a wash and condition, or a woman with shoulder length relaxed tresses looking for a simple wash and set, could be charged more than a white woman with super thick, easily-tangled, waist-length hair looking for a wash and condition.

I have a friend with super thick hair, who is white, and it takes her more time and effort to shampoo, condition, blow dry and flat iron her hair (her usual routine) than it does for me to wash and do a roller set or braid out (my usual routine) (and I can't imagine too many people flocking to Dillards for highly intricate services).
This is why I'm so happy to have learned how to do my hair on my own.

this article has a picture of one of the plaintiffs, one can't seriously believe that her hair requires a lot of service (outside of perhaps a chemical service) above and beyond what is considered normal

What the heck?!?! :angry2: Such ignorance in those comments!!! It is very sad.:( I understand that salons have different pricing for different reasons (hair length, texture, etc.). Even nail salons have flexible pricing. I agree that some types and lengths of hair does take longer to style. But for the most part, washing even the kinkiest textured hair of a black women usually takes no longer than washing and detangling a white women's hair that has tight corkscrew curls. I wonder if they charge her more as well? It sounds like the stylists at Dillards need proper training as not to balk in the face of different hair textures.

I didn't bother to read the comments but in my neighborhood , which is predominantly Indian, I'd pay a heck of a lot more to get my hair blown out and flat ironed that any Indian woman.
It'll take a stylist 20 mins to wash, conditon and blow out an Indian woman's hair. But it'll take her 45 mins with me. I guess they charge a lot more because it is more difficult dealing with AA hair and it takes a lot more time.

Ladies, I wouldn't get all worked up about the comments on that board. American Renaissance is a group designed to promote white supremacy... they're like a kinder, gentler KKK. (ha)

So the types of people who'd post on that board would definitely be racist. They admit they're racists and they're proud of it.

Don't waste your energy on them.

Exactly, my hair is fine and thin. I sometimes go to the same salon as my white girlfriend when I want a wash and blow-dry and I ALWAYS wait for her. You can't automatically charge me more because I'm black, you have to look at the actual service I'm requesting.

Dillards has long been known for their racist and discriminatory practices. Why black people still spend their hard earned money there is a mystery to me. But thats whole other issue. Myself personally, I wouldnt want to be charged more than my white counterpart to get my hair done. It takes all of 6 or 7 minutes to wash and condition my shoulder length hair. To sit under the dryer and get a flat iron is a combined 35 to 40 minutes. In all my trip to the stylist is less than hour. It really not that complicated to handle to AA hair. Maybe Dillards needs some stylists who actually know what they are doing. It wouldnt hurt for more sistas to learn how to properly care for their hair home. Theres a ton of money to be saved from that trust me. I dont go to the stylist anymore. After enough practicing and a few mishaps, I get the same results at home as I would at the salon.;)

<-----This hair is harder to clean?? It sounds like some racist bull, based on the nasty stereotype that Blacks are "dirty" which we know is insane, wrong, totally false, and ignorant....

This comment in particular had me FUMING:

Maybe I showed sue my hairdresser. My hair is down to my waist. It takes FOUR perms to get all of my hair curled. Should I complain that I don’t get charged the same as a person with short hair?
I have come to the conclusion that blacks don’t want to use common sense, they just want to find something to grip about. Anything that Whites have, they want it & if they can’t get it (such as white hair) then let’s holler discrimination. Blacks won’t be happy until they have taken over our country, then turn it into a ghetto. But I’m sure somehow that will be our fault! haha

THis is bull**** and we know it! Then lets talk about all the White Woman who want a Black Woman's Lips, Ass, and Body....What about you eating up our music and culture...Jacking our style, language, and our flair.......

So blacks have to pay more to have their hair washed because Dillard's doesn't take the time to hire hairdressers that know how to "handle" hair of ALL ethnicities?

Honestly, I can agree with ethnic hair needing a lot of conditining. But I've lived with white males and females for the past four years and they deep condition once a week, just like I do, but instead of combating natural dryness, they're combating damage done by flat irons, curling irons, and blowdrying every day. So the whites should be getting a little pizzed that they're not getting any conditioning at their salons.

I never shop at Dillard's anyway. But, to put it plainly, I am so sick of racism and racist issues. It's passe and the cool people have moved past it. Apparently, all the non-cool people were answering that article.

Yes the comments were ridiculous...but what else can you expect from a racist website? American Renissance is just a "cleaned up" version of the Klan.

Stupid people are everywhere...:ohwell:

"In West Africa, the black women use goat dung to do their hairstyles. Shouldn’t Dillards offer this option? I think I learned that goat dung thing in one of my diversity training classes…. or maybe not. However it IS true!"

wtf? where did this ignorant bastard learn this from?
