Scab hair!

Some say that after years and years of relaxing that some of the chemicals seep into your scalp. When you let your hair grow out you can tell becuase the scab hair is sometimes coarser and drier than what you natural texture is. Some people get it in patches like me. I have or had about 3 inches before I got it cut off. Some people after doing the big chop (twa) their whole head is like that and they wait a few months for somemore newgrowth to come in and chop the ends of again.

Wow! i have a patch in the back of my hair and I thought it was 4b hair or something. Thanks for the info. Do you have a website I could visit to get more info? Thanks

When I went natural I had it around my hairline as well. It was extremely coarse and grew about two inches before my normal hair started sprouting.

I use to always have problems with that secrtion of hair and I still do! My mom use to leave the relaxer on there extra long because we knew that was the "bad" section. I can't comb through it or anything. Thanks ladies! I think this is important for transitioners to know so that they are not discouraged.

I never had it. i wonder why some do and some dont.....

Scab hair is directly underneath the scalp that has been affected by the harsh chemicals. Even though the hair is new growth, it isn't "trained" to behave in it's natural state. The hair is still sort of straight, very dry ans brittle. It ususally takes somewhere areound 6 months to completely grow . Not everyone experience scab hair. The longer a person was relaxed, the more likely they will be affected.

I never had it and I transitioned 3 times in my life.

I had scab hair after I chopped my hair back in July, but mine was oddly only on the left side of my nape. It was rough and frizzy didn't blend with the rest of my hair. I cut that area 3 times since July and now it is finally back to how it's supposed to be, curly and it blends in with the rest.

Now I have an aunt who had a body wave put in 10 years ago and her hair has never been the same since.

Maybe the amount of scab hair depends on how often you relaxed. If you relaxed every 6 weeks, you might have more scab hair than someone who relaxed 4 times a year. Also, someone who would end up with relaxer directly touching their scalp might have scab hair while someone who was careful not to let the chemicals touch thier scalp might not.

I have it in the same place! Well, manybe scalp massages will help.

I hope I don't have it. I only started at the end of high school and even then didn't keep up relaxing on a regular basis. (I "transitioned" once when all my hair gradually broke off to the newgrowth due to poor hair habits) All told i only averaged about 2-3 times a year.
Right now the newgrowth is feeling soft and coily, thick and very appealing.

I got a hair cut at about 1 month after my bc and I think I got rid of all of it. It was so dry and my scalp was itchy. I went to the derm and he said my scalp was fine and stopping the relaxer was probably the best thing I could have done for it

Here's another tip that worked really well for me, spritz that area every day and keeping it moisturized. It made it grow really fast!
