Safflower Oil

stay at your best ♥
Where are you ladies getting your safflower oil from? Do you use refined or unrefined?

I was thinking about picking up some from Target, but I noticed it was refined...I'm thinking about waiting until I can get my hands on the unrefined... I'm feeling really impatient though lol.

I actually get my safflower oil from the grocery store but I never paid attention to whether it was refined or unrefined.

nicole625 thank you for responding! what changes have you noticed regarding your hair since you've started using safflower oil? Do you feel that it has really helped your hair?

I used to use safflower oil. It was nice, I used it for a couple months. I felt like it more coated my hair, instead of absorbing into it. Kind of like a cone, but without the drying effect after a few days if that makes sense. It was good tho, it gave good slip and my hair looked shiny and felt soft, great sealant. But pretty much did the same for me as africa's best or hot six oil. I got the safflower as a gift, so when it was done I just replaced it with something I could find easier.

I now use coconut oil. Absorbs into my hair much better and makes it strong and soft.

I got it at the grocery store. It's easily accessible but when it comes to finding, I spent a while looking in between the different oils. There were like 10 brands of olive oil, 5 brands of canola oil, 7 brands of vegetable oil, 2 brands of sunflower oil, but only 1 brand of safflower oil. I'm just trying to say that you kind of have to look for it because it's not a distinctive colour or anything.

thank you ladies for the responses! Aireen what store did you get yours from? I saw some LouAna brand safflower oil at Walmart and I don't remember the name of the other brand that I saw at Target. Oh, and do you like safflower oil for your hair?

I was curious about this oil as well so I bought some out my local grocery store. It was refined and my hair didn't like it as a sealant or prepoo but it's a decent oil for oil rinsing.

Oh sorry... I'm Canadian... :lachen: Honestly though, if I can get it here, you can definitely get it there. Canada's always slow to get items. I use it in conditioner to get the ceramide benefits, I like it, it's a light oil in my opinion. I put it a lot in those PJ buys that end up sucking and it perks it up and makes it good.

I've never seen unrefined safflower oil even in health food stores. What I've noticed is the kind you'll see in e.g. walmart is pale yellow, and health food brands are a golden yellow. So maybe there's refined and less refined. I've never used it straight on my hair - only in oil and butter blends. I use this oil more for eating. It's a good butter substitute on toast or popcorn. :)

^^ thank you! I was about to pick it up in the store, but when I noticed that it said refined I chose to wait. I figured it was like coconut oil in that unrefined has more nutrients or whatever. I was so bummed! But I'll go back by the store sometime this week and pick it up. I hope my hair likes it!

I get mine from Whole Foods. Not sure if it is refined or unrefined. It makes my hair noticeably softer. I like it. I have mixed it with coconut oil and also with JBCO to thin it out a bit. So far so good.

I get mine from Whole Paycheck; but, I use it for oil pulling not on my hair.

anyone use it on their skin?

I do!
I add it to my lotion in the winter. I used to use EVOO but the Safflower doesn't have a strong smell so I use it.

OP-
I also purchased mine at the grocery store in the cooking aisle. I purchased mine from Meijer but I'm sure Kroger, Walmart and other grocery stores may have it as well.

I did the same thing when I last bought some Grapeseed oil. I got tired of ordering from Amazon. LoL

GL! :)

Thank you so much ladies for all of the responses! I finally bought some last week and I LOVE it!! It's a staple for sure :D

I just tried safflower oil for the first time on my natural hair after Ms Lala mentioned it in her youtube video, and my hair loves it! I did a braidout with it.

I have been using safflower oil exclusively on my hair (no other oils for me!) ever since I made this thread. I absolutely love it, I always add some to my conditioners and sometimes use it to seal. Great stuff :yep:

Poohbear Girl my hair loves safflower oil. It actually air dries soft and it seems to smooth my cuticles. It also isn't heavy so it doesn't leave build up. I'm glad it worked for you too!:yep:

whiteoleander91 - I had to retire the Long Aid Activator Gel for awhile. I kept getting this sticky residue on my fingers whenever I touch my hair. I know I should keep my hands out of my hair but I have hand-in-hair disease! :weird:

Ms Lala - It sure does feel like this oil seals the cuticle and keeps my hair soft. I haven't tried it yet for airdrying which I'm thinking about trying today when I get off from work after washing and conditioning. I just wish I can retain hair length like you have done!!! I'm still stuck at this APL/BSB length. :wallbash: I stopped using the flat iron back in March 2013. I tried wash n go's for a few months and now I've been doing twistouts/braidouts for the past month. I just need to bite the bullet and stick with protective twists styles for a year or more.

Poohbear aww that's too bad about the activator gel. When you pair it with styling gel, have you tried using less activator, more gel? Another suggestion is try putting on the styling gel first, then some activator gel over it.

whiteoleander91 - when I use less, it does help a bit with the stickiness but doesn't give me the look I want when I use more. Next time I think about trying it again, I'll take your suggestion and try applying the styling gel first (I have EcoStyler and Fantasia ic styling gel) then the activator gel. ;)

Poohbear yeah I really like the safflower oil. We don't have the same exact texture but there are some similarities in our strands. We don't have thick strands and our hair is prone to breakage. I don't know if you remember but I was stuck at BSL for a LONG time. Mostly due to cutting out color damage. You have been on here since I got started and know it wasn't easy for me retaining length, meaning I can't use lots of heat, wear my hair out etc... like some and still see retention. You will reach your goals though, just hang in there and do what you know works. I don't think I ever would have reached this length w/o protective styles just because of how my hair is prone to breakage. Even now if I wear my hair loose for a couple weeks I'll notice that I need to trim my ends. So I still incorporate protective styles in my routine. I actually like wearing them though because it saves me time in the morning.

Bump. Saw safflower oil at Walmart last night and the only thing that kept me from buying it was that my daughter has sunflower and grapeseed oils already... I have hemp seed to use up and will be using some of her sulflower for a bit... still may purchase it at the beginning of April to try it out for a month. I remember trying it years ago and made a note that it moisturized and softened my hair...
