Safe way to pony tail?

For the last two weeks I have been wearing a phony pony. I will be doing this for at least the first two weeks after every relaxer as my hair straightens in no time and being fine, won't do a thing. I have been completely avoiding heat for about the last month, so this is all I can come up with at the moment for a style that doesn't look like my finger is permanently in a socket...
I am concerned about breaking my hair where it is gathered. No breakage yet, but is there a safe elastic that is KNOWN not to break hair? I am varying the place where my hair is gathered and I take it down as soon as I get home, trying to be careful. Any recs?

I'm worried about the same thing aerie. I recently tried a braid out because Id been wearing my new phonytail bun for about a week and I was concerned about breakage and thinning on the edges...

Aerie,

I have the same concern. Wearing my hair down was causing facial breakouts so I have decided to wear the phonytail everyday. I have concern about breakage so I do take it down everyday and change the location. I also wear the hair loose at night. I think the key is making sure the phonytail is loose enough so that the hair doesn't break under tension.

I'm assuming you guys are talking about wearing your hair in a bun and then attaching a fake pony? If that's what you mean, would it work if you put your hair in a single braid instead and then tuck it under before applying the fake pony? I apologize if this suggestion isn't achievable.

I've never worn a fake pony and my hair is natural and in braids. I do put my braids in a single pony braid though, which I tuck under, and that doesn't pull on the hair at my hairline. That's why I thought it might be a good break for your hairline; plus you don't need an elastic to hold your hair at the "meeting point".

Nonie,

I put my natural hair in a pony tail, curl the ends with rollers and attach a pony tail hair clip. My breakage occurred at the back. I think you have to have quite a bit of hair to hold a drawstring pontytail in place. I never could get it to stay or look even half way real.

I use cut up pantyhose and tights as ponytail holders. I put the comb on the fake pony underneath the ponytail holder--not through my hair and scraping along my scalp.

I use two giant, open ended hair pins on the bottom of the fake piece. And I keep my edges extra moisturized by applying a mix of Carolyn Gray's hair oil and Jamaican black castor oil at night.

sassygirl125,
Do you ever notice any hair in the pantyhose thingies? This sounds like a great idea! Thanks!

lunalight7,
How did your braid-out come out? I did one once, but was roundly criticized by my son! LOL

Had that horizontal thing goin'on instead of hanging down!!

Bett1e,

I make a ponytail too, with my natural hair and "catch" the end of it with the elastic on the second loop, if you know what I mean, to keep the ends tucked under. I then pull the drawstring up to secure it and then pin it with hairpins. I then put a scrunchie around the phony pony as if it were all mine (well it is, I paid for it). It seems to look more natural this way since the scrunchie adds a line of demarcation between the texture of the phony pony and my hair. My hair is not nearly that silky, after week two post-relaxer and multiple shampoos, but I make sure the color is dead-on; it is remarkable how close I can get the textures to match with that scrunchie separating the two textures!

ugh this happened to me except without the phony pony. I exprienced A LOT of breakage around the band where the ponytail gathers. I am no longer wearing my hair in a ponytail until I get it under control and even then it will be a very , very loose ponytail. My hair type (4b) is fragile(but I have very thick hair) . Right now I am wearing my hair in one and two french braids - no more ponytails for me!

use a jaw clip as a pony tail....not the long ones but the circular ones that you have to squeeze to open. They arent tight and dont leave a nasty dent...ive been using them for a year and i havent had breakage where i normally get it from elastic bands....or just wrap your elastic band no more than twice its sort of like a loose ponytail...the edges are still smooth and it eliminates those awful pony migranes that sum of us get when its so tight.

Nope. I made mine out of a pair of lycra/spandex tights. They are fairly slippery. I also like the bootleg Blax elastics made by Goody and Scunci. But they are always too small or too big.

Ayeshia,

My new techique is to put the clip on the hair in the elastic and not on the hair coming from the scalp.
I think this will avoid future breakage but I don't know. I have to post my new setback.

ayeshia,
I would love to tryh this, but I don't know what the jaw clip pony tail is...do you have a picture? I have been getting those headaches, too, so I know it's too tight. Thanks!

Doesnt your hair have to be kind of long to do a jaw clip? Unless I am thinking of some other accessory.

YOu put your hair in a ponytail and then clip the jaw clip to the elastic. YOur hair just has to be long enough to be put in an elastic.

I am still confuseud. My hair is a little past my shoulders. Putting my hair in the pony tail wrapper ( elastic) is what caused breakage so I guess this wouldnt work for me. I need a way to put my hair in a ponytail without using any elastic or stress on the part where I gather my hair. I could do a loose ponytail but I get real anal about fly aways!

Sky,

Ponytails are my enemies as well but I don't like my hair flying everywhere throughout the day so I wear the phonytails.

sowwy unfortunately i dont have a pic but those clips are at the hair supply stores for like 50 cents each maybe i could look for a pic on the internet....ill get back to ya on this one

Okay I am familiar with those but how do you use them? If I put my hair in a pony tail first it pulls it.

Okay, I found what works for me. I put UBH on the hair; held the hair in a pony tail; tied a black knee high around the hair (ponytail); went to sleep with a scarf and I woke up the pony tail was very neat. I then attached the butterfly clip phony tail to the stocking and the hair is not pulling at all and there is no tension. I think the stocking method is the best way to keep the tension and breakage limited if you wear a fake pony tail.

I have to say that the pantyhose holders are truly no snag. They just slide right out of your hair.

Exactly, and I never would have tried it if it wasn't for this thread. That black knee high has been laying on my dresser for years unused. Today, I finally got to use it.
