Rose Petal Powder + Coconut Milk = Softer Hair

Ok, so here's the story of my discovery: I was frequenting an east indian hair salon a few years ago to get my eyebrows threaded. I had noticed that the stylist who did my brows was turning out some beautiful heads but never thought to get my own hair done there. I think she was curious about black hair and wanted to give me a condition, cut and style. Though I've seen several east indians with the kinky, curly stuff, I think she just wanted to get more money out of me:lol:

She did an indian head massage then put in a 'hair pack' which is just their term for a treatment. I asked her if there was something rose-scented in the pack (thinking it was rose water) and I didn't think she'd tell me but she said, "Naam [yes], rose petal powder." I asked what it did and she said "adds fragrance, cooling effect and good for soft hair." When she rinsed my hair, it was AMAZINGLY soft and she went on to give me one of the best precision cuts I HAVE EVER HAD. Everyone complimented me on that haircut.

I stopped going to that hair salon altogether when I developed little bumps above my eyebrows from the threading (:() but I remembered the rose petal powder and was thinking there must be something to it. I went to an indian market and picked up a Hesh brand box.

I started off with the classic coconut-lime conditioner.. used an indian brand of coconut milk, mixed in lime juice and let it sit in the fridge for a couple days. Today, I mixed in enough rose petal powder to make a paste and used a hand blender for a smoother consistency. I also added perfumed coconut oil which I usually add to either my coconut milk or coco-lime mix. After rinsing, my hair is SO SOFT:grin: I've used coconut milk and the coconut-lime mixture alone and while my hair was soft, it wasn't like this so I think the rose petal powder made a difference.

It is a powder so it's a bit of a chore to rinse but I think it's worth it.. just when I promised myself I was going to simplify my routine. Oh well, just thought I'd share.:)

Well shoot, why did I have to read this after getting home from the indian store?!
Now I'm tempted to go back, I actually remember seeing the rose petal powder on the shelf .

Keluric, Imma gonna get you for this!

That is good news !!! I'm glad you found that for your hair. :)

I have a box of Hesh rose powder and a can of indian coconut milk. I'll get the lime juice tomorrow.

I wanted to ask you: what did the coconut-lime treatment (without rose powder) do to your hair? Did you just notice softness?

With just that mix my hair was soft and it loosened my curl pattern a little bit. But with the rose petal powder, it's even softer.

I'm definitely going to try this !!! Thanks a lot Keluric.

I was looking at this box last week wondering what I could do with it, and if I could use it in my hair.:p
(It's for the face originally, I think)

Yep, makes for very soft skin too. I mix it with rose water and make a 'face pack.'

That's an awesome post! Thanks for sharing! I use the Rose Petal powder (w/Amla) for a facial mask but hadn't considered using it for my hair... :scratchch

I might even try adding the rose petal powder to my henna or indigo.. *wheels turning in head*

So...I'm not the only one? I'll report back next week on how it worked!

So that's what you do with Rose petal powder!

I've seen it, but....

Anyway, gonna order me some tu-day!!!

Yep, I use the hesh brand.. looks like they've changed the box since the last time I bought some.

It's a really good product for the skin but I figured since the indian stylist used it, so could I :-) Granted whatever else she put in the hair pack made my hair feel great, I'm positive there's something to this rose petal powder.

By the way, thanks for posting that link to hennaworld.info ... it made me realize I might need to stay out of indian markets.. I have just about every product they sell.. haha.

keluric,

could I just use the rose petal powder & coconut milk in a mixture? Is the purpose of the lime juice to clarify the hair? Also, how long do you leave the mixture in your hair?

I only used the lime juice because it loosens my curl pattern just a bit when mixed with the coconut milk for a few days. Rose petal powder and coconut milk should be fine. I left it in for three hours just because I had some time on my hands.

I'd go and look at some of the heads coming out. I was in the salon quite a few times watching their work before I let her do my hair. Many of the women who came in already had beautiful hair but I was impressed that the stylist could make it look even better. While east indian women have a lot of different textures like black women, not all of the stylists can do everyone's hair.

Has anyone else tried this rose petal powder?

I got some on Wednesday, but I haven't decided how to to use it.

Anyone in NYC know where an Indian market is preferably in the Bronx or in Manhattan

When I lived in NYC, I used to go to little india in Queens. Just hop on the 7 train and get off 74th street Jackson Heights. There is a huge supermarket there . Oh and if you go you can do some window shopping and take a peek at the beautiful saris and jewlery in the surrounding stores.

since I moved to Hawaii a few days ago I've seen coconut milk everywhere so I bought two cans. I have one in now as a preshampoo treatment. the stuff is kinda messy though, its runny so I tied a towel around my neck
