Ok, so here's the story of my discovery: I was frequenting an east indian hair salon a few years ago to get my eyebrows threaded. I had noticed that the stylist who did my brows was turning out some beautiful heads but never thought to get my own hair done there. I think she was curious about black hair and wanted to give me a condition, cut and style. Though I've seen several east indians with the kinky, curly stuff, I think she just wanted to get more money out of me
She did an indian head massage then put in a 'hair pack' which is just their term for a treatment. I asked her if there was something rose-scented in the pack (thinking it was rose water) and I didn't think she'd tell me but she said, "Naam [yes], rose petal powder." I asked what it did and she said "adds fragrance, cooling effect and good for soft hair." When she rinsed my hair, it was AMAZINGLY soft and she went on to give me one of the best precision cuts I HAVE EVER HAD. Everyone complimented me on that haircut.
I stopped going to that hair salon altogether when I developed little bumps above my eyebrows from the threading () but I remembered the rose petal powder and was thinking there must be something to it. I went to an indian market and picked up a Hesh brand box.
I started off with the classic coconut-lime conditioner.. used an indian brand of coconut milk, mixed in lime juice and let it sit in the fridge for a couple days. Today, I mixed in enough rose petal powder to make a paste and used a hand blender for a smoother consistency. I also added perfumed coconut oil which I usually add to either my coconut milk or coco-lime mix. After rinsing, my hair is SO SOFT I've used coconut milk and the coconut-lime mixture alone and while my hair was soft, it wasn't like this so I think the rose petal powder made a difference.
It is a powder so it's a bit of a chore to rinse but I think it's worth it.. just when I promised myself I was going to simplify my routine. Oh well, just thought I'd share.
