Rogaine

My dermatologist recommended I use Men's Rogaine (5%) after I was diagnosed with alopecia. It made me dizzy at first but that ended in about 2-3 dys. I faithfully used it twice a day for a year and then began alternating with an essential oil mixture. So far, my hair hasn't fallen out and has grown back. The key to making Rogaine work is keeping your scalp clean. If you can reduce the amount of sebum on your scalp so Rogaine can penetrate, it will work the way it is supposed to. Otherwise, you are wasting your money.

Yikes headaches.. Thin hair.. my hair is already weak from the 3 years of wearing a weave.. I have a patch of hair missing .What should I do?

I had really bad results with Rogaine and most recently Scalp-Med. Seems I am highly allergic to the main ingredient monoxidil. It made my scalp tender on day one by the end of day two I was scratching like no tommarrow, but I thought it was "working." By day four, well it was really nasty:eek: . My scalp broke out in red bumps that oozed clear/yellowish fluid that covered the top of my head in patches. I discontinued using it and made an emergency appt. with my dermotolgist -who suggested it initially.
Well that was on a Fri so I had to wait the entire weekend to see her. The most embarrassing was sitting there at the dinner table with my family and having this oozy stuff (from my scalp) run down my forehead!!! Totally gross!!! I was so scared!! I though my G-d please don't let me loose all of my hair! It cleared up in about three weeks. I was afraid to wash my hair, only cool water rinses daily to remove some of the dried oozing stuff, no blow drying, no other products.
Ok, that was about three years ago. Fast forward to this past week. I had some excess shedding, got scared and watched this infomercial on Scalpmed. It is supposed to be more gentle than regular Rogaine. So if you experienced irritation with Rogaine, this new stuff is supposed to work great for you:lachen: . Well, by day two I was having the same reaction as before- this time I recognized that it wasn't "working." So the itching and tender scalp were bad signs!:look: I stopped using the product and have had some breakouts and some scalp oozing (nothing like before, but I only used it 2 days). In fact in about three more days it should be back to totally normal. This time I used cortaid on my scalp and treated it like a burn. I also have been applying oils like coconut, castor and mtg.

All this to share my experience and say if you are going to try it, you may want to do a patch test first for a few days. I also noted that the worst areas of my reaction were in the spots where my hair is most thin!

Interesting, my derm also told me to use the men's version. I thought she was nuts but I have been using it off and on (mainly because I am trying to start a family and my doc told me that Rogaine can't be used when I am pregnant). Once I start using it faithfully again, maybe my edges will be thicker. Even though the regrown hair on my edges is a bit thinner, I am just happy to have hair there.
