I tried this product out last night. It was bought for $3.49 and an Indian grocery. It's a premium coconut hair oil enriched with henna, alma and lemon.

It took a while and another person to help me get anything out of the bottle. The contents were so thick that it splashed out in a huge glob and took the cap off with it!

The first thing I noticed is that it not only looked and felt chunky but it has this odor to it that reminds me of old people.

It feels strange to the touch and is very greasy so. The directions are to apply it regularly to the scalp and hair and for best results to leave it on overnight. It doesn't say if you should wash it out the next day or not.

Putting it on my hair, my hair became very shiny, but also very greasy. My ends refused to suck up any of the "oil" no matter how much I put on it. It's more of a grease than an oil. Had to wash my hands a few times.

My hair did feel soft but no softer than any other grease or pomade would make it feel. I left it on over night and didn't notice and big changes except that the greasiness had been absorbed by the hair and scalp. My hair was less shiny than when I had put the Vatika on. It feels soft still and slighty more volumous.

Overall, I don't see any difference between Vatika oil and any other grease/pomade besides the fact that it has no mineral oil or petroleum. I still prefer my WGO to this but I'm going to finish this and see how I feel.

at "old people"!! I bought some Neem Oil. I couldn't sniff it because of the seal. I got it home and decided there is no way I'm putting this stuff in my hair. It smells like garlic chicken. I'll find something to do with it, though...

Maybe you could sit the Vatika bottle in some hot water for 5-10 minutes to melt it... I find this works best with coconut oil based stuff.

I just took the inside cap off and threw it away. Once I rub it in my hands, it melts enough to be put in my hair. I should have put it under the facet though, you're right.

Oh, the "old people" smell. When I was putting the oil in my hair, I was having flashbacks of when I volunteered in nursing homes and this one client kept sailing his roasted Cornish Hen across the room and throwing corn and mashed potatoes at everyone.

awww no!! i went to the site to recheck the info because the stuff seemed so good. i think the difference between this and a grease and a pomade is that is not meant to stay on the scalp for more than overnight or a hour or so. it is meant to be washed out. like the glover scalp treatment which is meant to be left on for a couple of hours and then wash out of the hair. on several of the websites they say they use oil at night and in the morning they shampoo with shikakai. i guess the combo works. its confusing reading those labels because they have like a thousand words in indian but like a paragraph in english. i now know to go to the main website because they give more details then some of the bottles do.
Here is what the site said:
Dabur Vatika Hair Oil

I still want to try this. I dont know something about is calling me. Thanks for the review though I will keep it in mind when I try this out.

That's it in a nutshell.

This is supposed to be a pre-shampoo treatment. The first time I used it I didn't like it at all, but then I used it properly and it was great.

I use shikakai, but any mild shampoo should work ok. As you can see on the site (which is really helpful. you were smart to go there.) they tell you to wash it out. Some companies say you can leave it in for styling or use it as a hot oil. But Dabur didn't mean for this to be left in the hair as a reguar oil or conditioner. Remember, this is an Indian company. Most Asians don't add oil to their hair for daily styling. If I don't lightly blowdry my hair before I twists it, the Vatika makes my hair feel hard. I'm still not sure why that is.

Hindi (I think that's what the language is) is an Eastern language so it looks like more than what it really is when written.

that would explain why the instructions for me in english were like two sentences but the hindi instructions took up the whole side of the box. the website was very helpful because i was not sure what i was supposed to do with my amla oil. i was just going to put it on my ends but now i know that i can use it as a preshampoo as well.
quick question when you use shikakai do you need amla and aritha or could you do without it? some websites say you need all three to make a shampoo and some just say shikakai. i am so interested in gaining more knowledge about indian hair care regime because the ones i see following this have the shiniest and healthiest hair i have ever seen. so something must be working. of course the pj in me wont follow this religiously but i would like to use this on a week to week basis.

I've been to the site before. I know it's a pre-poo treatment and you can leave it on at night and wash it out in the morning (I plan to do that this afternoon)

Everything on the bottle is in English

I just use Shikakai. I have never used Reeth and Amla too, so I don't really have anything to compare it with. I always suggest people play around until they find what works for them. Everyone's hair is different.

This sounds strange....I think due to the ingredients in the oil it can solidify in cold weather. I shake the bottle before using it. I would say that you can put the oil in a cup of warm water first if it appears to have solidified. You would do that anyway if you were using it as a hot oil type thing.

Mine IS greasy but I find it absorbs right in after a while. It also makes the hair very soft.

I just bought a bottle and it smells of fresh coconut.
As far as the difference between this oil and Wild Growth Hair Oil, the biggest difference is the smell.

I put the Vatika oil in my hair and left it in and went out and I wasn't conscious of people thinking my hair smelled bad. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
