Reniece did a BKT Review!

Update: OK, watched it--@ MyAngeleyes, Thanks again for the link.

My take-home message from that video:

  1. Reniece understood and accurately described the effects of BKT on previously (chemically) treated treated hair: the effects are more dramatic than on virgin hair.
  2. From the description of her symptoms, she might be one the minority of individuals with chemical sensitivity to formalin (AKA formaldehyde) which might explain her strong reaction.
  3. She's rightfully concerned about the effect of prolonged occupational exposure to the fumes. Being exposed to strong chemicals at work everyday is a serious matter.
  4. She had fun producing the video (the mask!)
  5. Her hair is always beautiful (that color!)--coiled up or stretched out

That said, there's so much misinformation about the true nature of the chemicals, and the hazard they pose it wears me out. Yes, there are some serious potential hazards associated with the use of BKT but these can be minimized.

I've done my research, I've assessed the risks, and I take reasonable precautions to minimize my exposure and reduce potential hazards. Anyone who doesn't fully understand what they're dealing with or feels uncomfortable with the process is right to stay away from the stuff.

Me? I luv me some BKT!

P.S. What? No bun drop?!

Quite dramatic, lol.
Her experience would have terrified me too and I would never do it again if I was her either. I'm thinking some people probably have an allergic reaction to some of the ingredients...which is possible with any product.

Up to 10% Formalin in BKT solutions?! In a lab you have to work in a vented chemical safety hood to use that concentrated of solution :ohwell: One time exposure to the client is not great, but maybe not devastating. But that is certainly not safe for any hair stylist providing them on a regular basis. Both would need some sort of respiratory protection, at least.

I know I will not be getting a BKT anytime soon.

I liked the video too. I really admire Reniece. I appreciate her attention to detail (the "research" she did on Mwedzi's hair before straightening it) and I appreciate her honesty about her experience with BKT. I can think of a few people who would not be so forthcoming with their true experience of the product just because they like the results or they want to make the almighty dollar. That she was a guinea pig herself and actually test-drove the product instead of just knocking it down makes her more credible--especially since she could stand to make a killing offering it but her concern for her clients seems genuine.

BTW, I didn't just think she meant the exposure danger as real just from being at the salon daily. The dramatization seemed to imply that your loved ones who get close to your hair might be inhaling the stuff too, albeit in small amounts...since she can smell the stuff days later. BTW, I know someone with a bad sense of smell, which means he could be inhaling something bad that everyone wants to move away from and not know it. Doesn't mean his low sensitivity means he's safer. So her being sensitive is probably a good thing...coz it's like a defense mechanism to keep her safe. Just saying.

Anyway, the proof is in the pudding. Don't knock it till you try it I guess. I personally won't be trying it coz some of the BKT'd hair I've seen looks so wispy and not attractive to me. The Formaldehyde scares me too...and I really can't stand to have straight hair for long periods of time anymore. I'm also very happy with my regimen of about 9 years and methods of old that I tend to give new ideas the side-eye. :giggle:

WHen I BKTed my hair at home, I had the runny eyes and issues.
When I had it done by a professional. I did not smell a thing or have any issues. She had a blower.

Now,
Am I concerned about damage that having the product in the hair does? Yes.
They tell pregnant women to not color their hair or relax their hair. Chemicals do go into the body.
I believe that relaxers can cause damage over time to the body like any other chemical. Now, since we are damaged by almost everything around us ( Radiation from laptops/cellphones,....don't let me start talking about the U.S. food supply and these crazy people having sex with the chicken that they later sell to us for consumption.........

I don't know. I want to try it again but I am still wishy washy about it. I am content with my fro for now.

Good post.

To the bolded:
Maybe she's waiting for NYE like last year. I'll keep an eye out tommorow.

omg that scared the bejeefus outta me...

for a second there I thought the debil himself was gonna come out from the depths of hell and apply the bkt to her scalp. :evilbanana:

iCant. :dead:

It never ceases to amaze me what crazy things people will do for the sake of beauty. I watched a news piece done on BKT and they suggested that stylists wear gas masks when doing the BKT... yeah, um, no thank you.
I'm happy to see that Reniece did an honest review on this.

Very interesting....

I know people are interested in this product and I sincerely hope that they take the time to research it before making up their minds about it.

Wow, I didn't know much about this treatment other than several news reports I've seen. A coworker has this treatment (she's natural) and I was amazed at how straight her hair is always. I am afraid of anything emitting fumes to the point that masks have to be worn. I can just imagine that one day I will be watching a commercial from some law office asking for people who have gotten this treatment and have since developed various lung diseases so they can file claims. I also don't see enough information on the long term affects to the hair. I just can't imagine such a strong treatment being healthy. Great video!

I have been tempted to try but definitely noy now!!!!!!!!! That was scary and the music was scarier..... I'm so happy that she posted this!!!

lawd, the things people do/rationalize for some straight hair? Is it really that serious?

That mask, the music...

It seemed like a late night infomercial on ID on Discovery that would come on after Deadly Women.. My imagination is off the charts, don't mind me lol

But seriously, I really wish she had more time to make more videos. I love them, all 3 of them lol

I'm glad she made this video for those who don't know about the dangers of using that stuff....

I loved the video also. It takes a lot to share your own personal experiences on youtube especially when you didn't have a good experience.

You never know what products will cause reactions. Even the ones that are seemingly "safe" can negatively affect us. I had a bad reaction with Mane and Tail detangler, yet most people love it. I used a hair color that left me with welts on my forehead and a trip to the allergist, yet my mom uses the same color with no problems.

I appreciate her posing the video from her personal experience and sharing her concerns and why, as a stylist, she won't recommend it or offer it to her clients.
