Is it advantageous to get a relaxer before, during or after your period? I do recall reading a thread about this but am not able to find it.

I recently self relaxed while I was on my period and lets just say never again.

I don't know about before or after but I will never do it during. Talk about underprocessed hair. I know it's not the relaxer because I used it before.

The only thing that I heard you shouldn't do on your period is wash. I heard it (brace yourselves, squeamish ladies) makes you bleed harder!

But I don't see how having your monthly period woud affect the hair, already on your head. If you want to relax girl go on ahead!

I've heard not to relax during menses because body chemistry; i.e, pH level, hormones, etc. are all off balance during that period (pun intended!) and COULD cause even a relaxer that has been used succesfully in the past to either process faster (overprocess) or slower (under-process) even though left on for usual amount of time. I relaxed once years ago during my period and it was extremely under-processed and I've never tried it again.

IMO, this is possible because sebum and sweat, which naturally attaches to hair already on head, are both affected by body pH level and hormones and the "chemical difference" during menses could slow down or speed up the relaxer process. Just my opionion.

I did start a thread about this in the past but I can't pull it up at the moment.

One of the posters said stylists can tell if a woman in on her period by just looking at her hair. The body chemistry is absolutely different and getting relaxers during this time will burn the scalp more easily with unpredictable relaxer results.
