I have been wondering if I should stop relaxing nd go natural...but I hve some concerns, 1) I wear only straight styles (2)I sweat like a hog in my head (nappy roots) (3) Well this cause exessive breakage without the big chop? (4) Will it take a long time?

If you are planning on wearing your hair straight the majority of the time then stay relaxed.

The effort and amount of heat it would take to sustain straight styles isn't going to be worth it in terms of your hairs overall health.

I agree 100%

Are you willing to change your hair styles to be other than straight?

The sweating won't be an issue while natural as long as you are not using heat to combat this.

There are ladies on this board who can help you with the transition part if you are truly wanting to make the change.

You are going to have to change your mindset about your hair and what you may want though.

The first lesson you learn about natural hair is that it will tell you what it likes and does not like. You will have to take your cue from your hair to determine your styles, products etc.

It is a journey more than anything. Transitioning depending on the method you choose, is going to take some time and effort. You will be dealing with two textures of hair and the newest textures you will have the least amount of experience with because you haven't dealt with your natural texture in a while.

I would suggest thinking about these things and deciding if you really want to go natural, why you want to go natural and take it from there.

Whatever you decide I am sure someone on this site will be able to assist you with the goals you want to obtain.

Unless you live in a non humid area or have a great stylist who can give you a nice press, maybe you should stay relaxed if you plan on wearing your hair straight 100% of the time. I wear my hair staight most of the time but most of the time it's poofy or has lots of body. Also, it took me a while to figure out what I need to do to get it and keep it straight.

But if you never plan on trying textured styles then, nah. Keep it relaxed.

I think it depends on why you are going natural. If you want to be chemical free, I say go for it. That said, you will not be able to wear your hair out in relaxer straight styles. I wore my hair mainly pressed from 12-16 yrs old and was able to see growth and my hair was healthy. I pressed once every 2 weeks. I usually wore it in buns and updos, french braids, ect. This allowed for the hair to get puffy and revert a little bit. The bun hid the fact that my hair was reverting. It was only "out" maybe a day or two after the initial press, then back into revert friendly styles. I also only did "hard" presses for special occations. I did light to medium presses 2x a month. I hope this helps.

If you enjoy wearing straight styles every day and you don't want to wear your hair another way, then you're probably better off relaxed.

If you want to go natural and wear your hair straight most of the time then I would suggest using a good ceramic ionic tourmaline flat iron (like FHI - I've seen so many good reviews here on that), or hot comb (like pinkskates, who presses often and has beautiful hair), a good heat protectant, and something like Aveda anti-humectant. If you check out so so chic's fotki you'll see that she has beautiful BSL-MBL healthy natural hair that she has often worn straight.

Check out MissMarie's fotki! She has beautiful WL hair. She's been transitioning for 3 years!
