Hey relaxed/texlaxed,

What are YOUR top three, personal tips for long, healthy chemically processed hair? What turned your hair around and got the retention on point? Post here. :yep: Naturals who were once relaxed feel free to post yours also.

Mine:

1. Deep Conditioning REGULARLY without fail.
2. Proper Relaxer Technique
3. Being RELATIVELY Gentle w/ my hair. :look:
 
1) Stretching relaxers (12+ weeks)

2) Wet bunning

3) Deep conditioning weekly

1) Wash/co-wash every 3-4 days, instead of 1x per week or longer

2) Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize.

3) Be patient with two textures when stretching 16+ weeks
 
Great thread Poranges

1. Incorporating protein. For the longest time, I was scared of protein for no reason. Without ever trying a treatment I decided my hair "didn't like it." But when I started incorporating a weekly treatment into my wash day regimen, my hair did a huge turnaround. WAY less breakage which = more retention.

2. Moisture (DCs, moisturizing and sealing). My hair used to have some sick tree branch splits. Like, I used to save some of them because they were so mesmerizing. Um... anyway, once I discovered LHCF and started DCing weekly and moisturizing and sealing every night, I have very few splits. When I randomly search my ends I'll find one or two tiny ones that seem to have just split a day ago because they are so small. Again, huge turnaround.

3. Detangling properly. This includes not only using seamless combs, but going tip to root and making sure my DC has had a while to "soak." Finger combing on dry hair prior to washing is also a keeper.

Ooooh fun thread! I like how it's just 3 so instead of reading something long and lengthy, it's short and sweet.

1. Deep Conditioning
2. Stretching Relaxer
3. Trimming Hair
 
Moisturizing & sealing.

Use wide tooth combs and be gentle.

Lay off the heat as much as possible.

Changing my conditioners between moisture and protein ( just do a rotation and this has been working for years, throughout the transition and into texlax land). I always add aloe vera, oil, and sometimes honey to each D/C. It has made a world of difference.

Detangling with a my fingers, I use oil if its bad and aloe vera plus oil if its really bad. I don't use a comb. Even if I flat iron, minimal to no comb. I actually D/C'd, tension blow dried my hair and flat ironed it last week without a comb when I went out of town.

Keeping my hair stretched, whether this is with a blow dry or braided air drying (I have to give this a break as the SSK increase when I air dry) I have to keep my hair stretched. My texlaxed hair isn't too far from my natural 4B hair) and it will knot if given the chance.
 
Stretch touch ups as long as you can without issues.

Low manipulation or protective non direct heat styles as your staple.

Deep condition weekly with heat.

@Bun Mistress Wow that's impressive How do you go completely combless, is it all about the sectioning?

I took down my bun this morning and used my fingers only, my hair looks nice and the wave is more intact.
 
1 - Regular DC's which always include aloe vera and wheat germ oil and alternating the use of proteins
2 - Gentle handling - including no to low comb usage
3 - Air drying
Honourable mention to low manipulation styles and co washing (thx sunnieb how could I forget co washing:nono:)

Stretching times between touchups
Protein/moisture balance
Handle hair as if it's fine silk. If you are detangling with any tool and encounter a knot or snarl, do not wishbone your hair.

Bonus tip: dusting

Very small sections and smoothing. I always work in a downward motion to combat the fizz and tendency to fro. It was actually my first time trying this but it really worked. I will be doing this from now on and the best part is is didn't seem to take more time.
 
1) Protein Treatments Regular- Heavy every 2 months and light weekly/bi-weekly
2) Deep Conditioning - Weekly/Bi-weekly
3) Low Maintenance when it comes to hair styling
 
1. Placing a $20 water filter on my shower head to remove chlorine and other chemicals (greatly reduced hair breakage and shedding for me)

2. Washing and deep conditioning every week

3. Minimal heat - no more than once a week (absolutely no flat ironing)
