Relaxed Ladies that Cowash: Can cowashing be dangerous for us?

Ok, I lubs  co-washing. Yet I have found out that cowashing my natural hair vs. relaxed hair behaves very differently. For instance, my natural hair would soak up moisture and still beg for more. But now, with my relaxer it seems that my hair retains moisture more and I could be headed for a moisture overload.

So, my question is: How often do you do a protein treatment inorder to keep the moisture/protein balance in your strands? And what kind do you do or can you recommend a protein conditioner?

Thanks:)

I personally just go by feel. If i notice that my hair feels or looks "limp-ish" then I'd do a protein treatment. I use Keraphix , Dudley's hair rebuilder or i'll spray Infusium 23 in my hair after co washing. I co wash damn near everyday in the summer and thats when my hair grows the most.

Oh, I'm def not going to stop co-washing. I was just suprised by how much moisture my hair retains so I was wondering if any other relaxed ladies have the same concern.

Could you post a pic of Keraphix? Is it cheap?

Thanks

Now when you are stretching your hair when wet, should it be super stretchy because it is wet or not?

I do it as needed. When my hair feels like it needs moisture, this way when I do it I'm always getting the results I want from it. I don't co-wash if my hair is already soft and moisturized from my regimen, but say I do something I shouldn't one week, like flat-ironing all the way to the ends for some type of occasion, I'll treat my hair to a luscious co-wash and it keeps it balanced.

But I am testing my strands when wet? Should they be really stretchy or not?

I think I may be getting freaked out over nothing.

good post....my hair didnt used to like protein but it tolerates it much more now that I cowash often so Im assuming my hair needs it more now. I usually use a leave in with protein (I use BBD stretch as a leave in) and I use a light protein to deep condition with each week. I alternate b/t Aubrey GPB and ORS Replenishing paks.

ORS replenishing packet is a good protein conditioner? I'm not sure if I'm following correctly. If so, this will be easy to find at the BSS.

I agree with those who said they go by how there hair feels. That's somewhat of what I do at times but not really. If for some reason my hair is feeling extra dry (probably because I don't really moisturize during the week, just deep condition) I will probably co wash. To me it depends on the individuals hair because I noticed when I did co wash a lot, it was too much manipulation. My hair likes to be left alone.

I think its moisturizing but has light proteins in it so it gives strength and moisture at the same time. It makes my hair feel soft and strong. I love this stuff, its my favorite deep conditioner.

In think someone hit it on the head in an earlier thread, relaxed heads need to know what your hair needs. The needs of a no lye relaxed head may be different than a lye relaxed head. No lye relaxed heads tend to have problems with dryness, retaining moisture. Lye relaxed heads tend to have issues w/ shedding or breakage, thus needing more protein. My hair has no problem co washing or moisture retention since I switched from no lye to lye. I use a Balsam Protein conditioner for my co wash every other co wash and my hair thrives. You just have to diagnose what your hair needs, and understand WHY it needs it.

It usually goes for about $13-$20. And my hair isnt usually super stretchy. Its just takes a bit longer to detangle.

I just started co-washing with Salerm Protein Conditioner (not Salerm 21) and Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Cream Conditioner (together) and my hair is in

I poo and co-wash every 2-3 days and it has never been as soft and pliable as now. Washing this often also makes detangling a breeze. I bought the regular Salerm by mistake, now I'm sticking with it. The WHOLE Garnier Fructis line is great. I'm sticking with them until they change the formula or discontinue. Who knew?
