Relaxed Ladies: Some Questions...

Hello all! I'm a newbie to relaxed hair and so far (its only been a week or two), I've been under a wig. I would like to wear my hair out but its on the short side (barely SL) and other than hitting it up with a flat iron, I don't know what to really do with it.

I am interested in a bun; however, I have a super short barely there ponytail :lachen: so I can't make one with my own hair. Is there a such thing as a weave/extension bun? :look:

Also, if you all are using reconstructors, which brand do you favor?

How often do you moisturize? I thought that with relaxed hair I wouldn't have to moisturize as often. I also thought I'd be able to use lighter moisturizers...Boy was I wrong. :nono: I'm still hitting up my heavy duty Amla & Olive Heavy Cream from QB. :lick:

I think short hair looks cute with curls. You can do that and wear a cute headband or scarf around your head.

I agree :yep:, and experiment with no-heat methods to curl your hair.. twist-outs, bantu knot-outs, flattwists, cornrows, etc. Not saying you can never use a flat iron but you don't have to rely on it.

Welcome - I have some bun styles in my blog but they are all done without extensions. Like IDareT'sHair mentioned, you can buy a donut or as sunnieb mentioned, you can purchase extensions - either works.

I use several different protein products but the one I prefer is SSI Okra Reconstructor

Oh, I didn't answer all the questions.

For Reconstructors I use (and like) in no particular order:

Joico K-Pak
Nexxus Keraphix
SheScentIt Okra
Sebastian Penetraitt
Redken Extreme Rescue Force
Nexxus Emergencee
L'anza Reconstructor
Tigi Dumb Blonde

I'm wiggin' it and it's getting colder, so I have pulled out my Heavier Butters, Lotions, Creams & Pomades, Oils and Cowash Conditioners.

Spring/Summer I lighten it up. More lightweight Lotions, Spritzs etc......

Welcome to the relaxed side! My hair is short and I have been doing rods sets, braid outs, and alternating straight looks, I also use headbands and scarves to jazz it up.

I use Duo Tex as my reconstructor a week before relaxing and I use Joico Mositure recovery conditioner and shampoo weekly, sometimes I will use Aphogee 2 minute keratin condish during my weekly wash.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I tried a braidout and it was cute...too bad it only lasted a day. Next, I'm going to try the weave/extension bun thingy.

Yep, all kinds of faux bun ideas on youtube. The sock bun is my favorite go to on those days when I just can't be bothered. For leave-in's I LOVE Garnier sleek and shine. Anything creamy is good. Redken Anti-snap is ok too. Keep on that moisture and protein. And make friends with the Aubrey Organics and Roux Porosity Control brand of products. Break up with using heat regularly. Try to wean yourself off of heat completely if you can. Co-wash. Seal with light oils. And do hot oil treatments. Sleep wrapped in silk or satin. Satin covered sponge rollers are great to sleep in as well.

I use Aphogee as my reconstructor when needed. Have you ever tried a rod set? You can get atleast a week out of those. No manipulation at all. You just shake them and go in the morning.

roller sets and rod sets are the way to go or a wrap. i wash/dc once a week with Keracare and i use Aphogee 2 min reconstructor. i roller set and use the satin rollers to maintain if i don't feel like sleeping pretty. i use Mizani Coconut Souffle and i use grapeseed oil to seal daily. i use Keracare oilsheen too.
