Relaxed Hair and Waves

Are there any ladies here with relaxed hair and waves? Everytime I go for my touchup, my stylist tries to explain to me that my waves (which I get from my dad's side) are permanent and that if I want them to go away, she would have to leave the product on my hair for hours. Clearly, she can't do that because I burn so easily but would it be a bad idea to try and get rid of my waves? My stylist doesn't want me too because she likes them and she says that many people don't have hair like me.

Wait let me get this straight :

1. You still go to a stylist who recommends leaving relaxer on your hair for hours?
2. You are are actually entertaining this idea?

Umm. no leaving relaxer on for hours will leave u with no waves and no hair. Im assuming she is using a no lye relaxer on u. She prob. is using a mild relaxer that is not getting rid of the waves or not applying it well. My friend uses no lye for bone straight and she still has waves.

How do you intend to get rid of the waves? I have waves I guess, little zig zags. I'm not afraid of heat so that's how I get my hair straight.

No matter how long I leave a relaxer on I have waves. Mostly down my center part. But at my nape and roots as well. I like them. They don't bother me. I don't leave my relaxer on longer than recommended.

1) No, she says that if I want my hair to be bone straight and get rid of the waves then I would have to leave the product on for hours.

2) see above

Is the product relaxer? What is the product that she's leaving on for hours?

Just rollerset or flat iron to get rid of the waves. Leaving the relaxer on isn't a good idea and could be very damaging.

The stylist said that if she wanted to get rid of the waves she would have to leave the relaxer on for hours. Not that she did leave the relaxer on for hours or that she wants to leave the relaxer on for hours or that she's recommending leaving the relaxer on for hours. Just that that would be the way to do it, basically telling the OP that it's impossible to get rid of the waves with the relaxer.

1) NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't EVER leave a relaxer on for that long unless you want severe chemicals burns that will leave you bald & hospitalized.

2) RUN from this stylist, PLEASE! I can't believe she is telling you this! That's like a doctor telling you to chew glass!

I'm wondering, though: Do you mean you have waves when your hair is wet? Also, NO ONE that has 3c-4whatever hair can wash & go and have straight hair without styling/manipulating somehow.

My waves stay whether my hair is dry or wet. As for the type, I think I fall into the 3c/4a arena. She uses Mizani no lye and leaves it on for the recommended time or shorter depending on how my head feels. I'm very sensitive.

I'm the one that actually mentioned it to my stylist because I would see all of these AA women with completely straight hair (not a wave in sight) and wanted to know how I could achieve that. That's when my stylist told me that my hair has waves and that if I wanted to get rid of them, then she would have to leave the product on for a longer period and advised me against that.

I got my first relaxer at 12 and no stylist has ever been able to get my hair bone straight ever. With a fresh touch up, you can run your hand over my hair and feel the waves.

Some people just don't get "bone straight" hair. Other people (like me) get straight hair (no waves) with a mild relaxer. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Like someone else said, the waves mean there is still a lot of elasticity in your hair, which is a very good thing.

Same here. I think that's the case for 99% of people who are relaxed. You either have to rollerset or flat iron to get your hair straight. You won't be able to step out of the shower after washing your hair and have it dry straight like type 1 hair unless you use heat. Some people can use a scarf to get their hair straight, but that's never worked for me.

My hair still had a wave pattern if it was relaxed properly (meaning the relaxer was left on for the correct amount of time). The only way they went away was when my hair was overprocessed. I didn't intentionally want the wave pattern gone. I didn't even realize it was there until I started taking care of my own hair at home on a regular basis. But some stylists believe that if the hair is not bone straight, then the relaxer must not have taken so they'll leave it on longer or comb it through the rest of the hair. That's a recipe for disaster. I had to cut that stringy mess off and go natural because it was breaking off all over the place. It was bone straight when wet. :nono: Don't do it.
