Recommitment Thread...Finish strong in 08

Gym, such a timely thread.

My good:
1) Make some minor tweaks to my regimen:
  • paid my attention to porosity
  • added more Dominican products, especially conditioner rinses
  • added shine and color rinses
  • simplified my product circulation
2) Stretched my relaxer for the first 6 months of this year:
  • weeks 1-12, rollerset once or twice weekly
  • weeks 12-24, airdried then flat-ironed, every other week.

My bad:

I wore my hair down practically every day this entire year. I abandoned protective styling and I feel my ends suffered for it.

Recommitting myself:

1) I am 3-months post right now. I had originally intended to alternate stretches between 6 months / 3 months / 6 months / etc...But this stretch is going so drama-free, so I may just stretch to 6, which means I would have only 2 perms this year.

2) Also, for the remainder of the year, I will be co-washing daily. I started doing that for the past month or so, and I LOVE it. I don't know how I am going to keep it up once it gets cold, but I'll figure something out.

My good:
been in braids since July 1
haven't relaxed hair since May 7
PJism all but gone (hair products)
I am a self-braider
re-do braids at least monthly
no trimming ends

My bad:
slacked on moisturizing hair & scalp daily since products caused an itchy scalp

Recommitment:
daily moisture for the braids

Good: using coconut & castor oil to seal my ends, using leave in conditioners on a somewhat regular basis, dc immediately after coloring, protective styling ALL summer (good for me!)
Bad: becoming more of a PJ than i already was, jumping on too many bandwagons, not keeping up my routines
Recommitment: sit down and figure out a steady routine, dc and use protein when needed, consistently use oils to seal and leave in conditioner

GOOD rollersetting wearing my hair in ponytails (my hair is shoulderlength) finding certain staples and not pjing, searching and destroying split ends

BAD stretching too long, my hair doesnt like that.

RECOMMITMENT will start back on my multi vits and restock on my staples

Wonderful thread Gym!

Good: Vitamins vitamins vitamins. I boosted my vitamin regimen. Since I started taking biotin, a b-complex and MSM individually, my hair growth has gone through the roof. Also, I only trimmed once so far this year, thus resisting the urge to be scissor happy. My stretches were a lot longer too!

Bad: I was lazy and slacked off on my vits for a few weeks. Hand in hair affected me badly for a few months. I STILL do not have a hooded dryer, so I use a plastic cap and blow dryer to do my DC's ( I need to fix that asap).

Recommitment - I WILL TAKE MY VITAMINS EVERY DAY!!! Also I want to start using MT to give my hair growth another boost for the last three and a half months of the year. I'm also looking for a few new staples, including moisturising con.

Goods:
-Stopped getting bi-weekly blow-outs at the Dominican salon.
-Started stretching again to 12 weeks (before, I was doing 8-10 weeks).
-Moisturizing my hair every day or every other day with a real moisturizer, not just oil.
-Combing my hair more gently.
-Finally getting a real silk scarf and letting go of the polyester.
-Doing my own hair more often.
-Investing in a ceramic flat iron (Solia).
-Buying better hair products.

Bads
-Combing my hair way too often when I wear it straight.
-Scratching my scalp just to scratch, not b/c it itches.
-Not taking my vitamins.
-Not drinking enough water or taking in enough greens.

the good: being a product junkie saved my hair!!!, all things ceramides, the healthy 1 inch trim during my last touchup, switched from pink to ors no lye, amla oil, ntm silk touch....

the bad: not enough protective styles, still not moisturizing/sealing like i need to on a daily basis, starting to use more heat, seriously need to switch to a lye relaxer, still havent found a good moisturizer;ntm is working for now but its not enough and if i use too much ill get buildup

recommitment: more protective styling, less heat, 6 month stretch (maybe), consistent regimen!

My good: consistency with my hair regimen, taking my vitamins consistently

My bad: not dc'ing often enough (my natural hair needs it atleast once a week :perplexed) ripping thru my hair during detangling  not taking many hair pictures

My recommitment: Find the courage to cut off my straggly ends :cry3:...be very gentle with my hair during detangling.... find a protective style that lasts one full week....update my fotki every 3 months faithfully no matter what my hair looks like

Great thread. I haven't really thought about this before...

My good:
I wore protective styles exclusively and retained length

My bad:
Didn't DC as much as I should have so now I have longer dry-*** strands

Recommiting myself to:
Wash or CW every other day. DC at least 1 x week.

Hi Jazzy

Girl, you can do it. I know it's hard but be brave - you know jacked up ends only make the situation worse. I took the scissors to my raggedy ends last month and haven't looked back.

My good- discovering ayurvedic powders, oil rinsing & co washing together!
scalp massages- narrowing down my products-I'm taking more vitamins-eggs
incorporated in my diet
the bad-not staying natural-now I have to transition...again.
My goal until end of 08- continue transitioning and learning more about how to nurture and care for natural hair. Sometime in 08, I intend to buy mega tek and try it out.

Thank you for the encouragement.

That's a 4 inch setback. :cry3: :wallbash:

My good:
Regular 10-12 week stretches
Weekly washing

My bad:
Ugly protective styles
Too many trims
Too few DCs

My recommitment:
I shall continue to stretch to ten weeks, but I shall also wash AND deep condition 2x a week. I also will not get a trim until January 2009 (Wish me luck on this one, because I am starting to like the look of blunt ends tooooo much). Lastly, I shall try to rollerset weekly rather than wear protective styles 24/7.

Great thread!!

Good- Stopped PJism cold. I am now on a "just use it up challenge", DC every wash

Bad- too much flatironing

Recommitment- stay vigilant about protein needs, increase water intake, co-wsh 2-3x weekly, keep sealing with oil.

My Good: Using Aveda products (the best out of all). Using OCT and MT...I'm so glad that I did try it...the best! Keeping my ends from fraying even though I wear my hair out alot...I stand amazed! Using salt in my conditioners....can I just say, wow?

The Bad: Spending too much money on too many products.

Recommitment: Staying on course with OCT/MT and not slippin. Continue to keep my ends in tact. Continue to use the products that have given me the best results this year. CWing and protein and moisture like I have been, which has worked wonders for my hair!

GOOD: Using Aveda Dry Remedy, Wen, and renewing committment to keeping my hair natural and in twists. Using Qhemet Biologics products (Burdock Root Butter, Amla Cream, and Karkady mist) to moisturize. Baggying hair at night. Sealing with castor oil (which works much better for me than olive oil or coconut oil). Being willing to get a trim when it's needed. Learning that my hair does indeed grow 0.5 inches a month.

BAD: Complete and utter neglect of my hair when it was in microbraids. I barely moisturized it or wrapped it. My ends were so dry and damaged it was disgraceful and I had to get about an inch or more cut off, so my hair was no longer after the braids than it was before. :nono:

RECOMMITMENT: I like the look of braids so if I get them again, I will moisturize them properly. I will, however, keep my hair in twists until the end of the year. I will continue baggying them at night and will also explore Hydratherma products. I will keep using Qhemet to moisturize.
