Hi Ladies,

I have visions of relaxer dancing through my head...
sleeping.gif

I am due for a retouch in three weeks. I am 13 weeks post relaxer and frankly, I have never stretched things out this long. My hair is behaving wonderfully. I just did a no poo rinse with a braid out and lost like only two hairs

LOL.

I have been wearing braidouts 24/7 for the past month and a half so I don't really know how long my hair is... When I wash it, it reaches right above my shoulder blades (but maybe I am seeing things).

For those who waited 16 weeks or so, how much longer was your hair after the retouch was done? Were you pleasantly surprised, shocked, or dissapointed? I hoping that the news is good so that I will know that I am not doing all this for nothing. Thanks.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised! I last had a touch up in April and I'm due for one too. My hair has experienced growth, but I've been in and out of braids. You never actually see the true reults until your hair is smoothed by either a relaxer or a blow out. Good luck Chich!

I haven't gone as a long as 16 weeks (tho I'm toying with the idea) but everytime I've gone 12 weeks I have been pleasantly suprised. I had about 1.5 inches of growth - a TON for me because my hair grows very slowly.....

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

I say with 9 weeks or beyond, you should see a noticeable difference.

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Even though I have yet to make it to 16 weeks - all depending on how fast your hair grows you should see at least 1.5 to 2. You will be pleasantly suprised - which is why I love waiting. Not only is it good for your hair and scalp, but you actually see your growth and your hair should feel healthier.

Another thing for me is when I wait, I'm excited to get my relaxer touch up. It's like I am beyond ready. It doesn't seem like such a hair "chore".

Best to you.

I agree!! The last time I waited 16 weeks, and I WAS pleasantly surprised at my growth, and that was even with the trim I got.

I'm also due for my touchup in 3 weeks and I'm hoping for another nice surprise!!

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

How do you ladies comb through your hair went wet beyond 6 weeks post relaxer? I get my hair relaxed every 6 weeks because by the 5th week even with leave in condioner,I can not comb through my hair without excessive shedding and breakage. Once its dry its fine because I used s curl and braid it. Maybe I could try putting s curl in it while wet and use that as my comb out moisturizer. I really want to try to go beyond 6 weeks but my hair just cant take it. Once I reach bra strap I want to stop relaxing all together or just relax every 6 months so I'm fishing around for information on how to comb through wet hair when there is alot of new growth.

All of your advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tee Tee

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Tee Tee,
My hair does get tangled, but I just make sure I use a conditioner that gives me lots of "slip" then I use John Frieda Relax Retexturizing Serum, which is SO GREAT for detangling. I've even tried using other leave-ins instead but absolutely nothing works like this stuff does. After I put it in, the knots just slip right out. I still use my Headdress or other leave-in afterwards but the Serum is what detangles my hair the best!!!

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Thank you for that tip Lindy. I will keep that in mind. I was checking out your pictures, they are nice. I see that you have 3c/4a hair. I have 4a hair so I wonder if the frieda relax serum will work for me. I guess I'll have to try it

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Lindy,

That is a good tip. I think I am going to try that. Tee Tee, I bet it would work.

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Yes, it WILL work Tee Tee... i promise!!!

It costs $10 but it really does work!! I'm on my seccond bottle; I tried to do w/o it, but I just couldn't!!!

Sometimes I MAKE myself detangle without it, just because sometimes it seems like my hair will get too used to a product, then it seems not to act right without it...

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Lindy, can you purchase this serum at a BSS?

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Probably, Nita... I don't really know. I always get mine at CVS or Rite-Aid!!

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

10 bucks is worth it if it will allow me to go longer between relaxing. Do any of you ladies use heat occassionally as the weeks get longer before your touch up?

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

I go 16 weeks and I have almost 4 inches. I did expeience some breakage around the hairline from going a little too fast with my hair when trying to get the curls to lay down so I'm thinking about getting retouches a little earlier.

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

TeeTee,

I use heat or sometimes a rollerset - a week or two prior to my retouch. I don't comb at the scalp at all, but I do base my scalp.

Lindy, there is a Rite Aid around the corner - I'm going there on break.

Thanks Supergirl! That's exactly the kind of info that I was looking for. When I used to go every six weeks, I used to walk out of the salon and not notice any increase in length. I hope to walk out of the salon with "noticeable" length after 16 weeks.

Tee Tee,

I agree with Lindy. The John Frieda Relax Retexturizing Serum really works. I use it on soaking wet hair. What I am doing now is washing or rinsing then putting this serum on FIRST before my leave-in conditioner (Elucence, which is really soft, btw). Then I start combing from the ends first. I am also taking the full gamut of the Bargello Vitamins (MSM softens the new growth).

Before this board I used to start shedding at 10 weeks now I am not even losing hair while I comb, which is a good thing

Chichi,

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one singing the praises of JF Relax Retexturizing Serum!!!

I really think this stuff has saved my hair (from breakage during wet combouts)and helps me to make it to 16 weeks between touchups!!!

I'm always pleasantly surprised, even shocked in some cases at my length... especially after waiting 20-24 mths

I had the exact same problem as Tee Tee. I'm 7 weeks post touchup with fine hair that'll break in long strands where the relaxed hair meets the new growth. (This didn't happen until the 6th week.) I ran out and bought the John Frieda's Texture Correcting Serum in the Relax line for chemically straightened hair. It felt viscous in my palm, but it's STARTLING how quickly and easily my hair detangled.

Much less shedding. Frieda better stop that

craft!

Even Cathy Howse praises it.

Thanks Lindy and ChiChi and PrettyBrownEyes and others who posted about the serum.

Re: Realistically, How Many Inches Should I Expect

Wow, I need to try that serum... My new growth is very easy to comb once i apply castor oil...it's my relaxed hair that's an emerging problem now

mine grows really slow as well. i usually have about 1½" after waiting 16 weeks. i hope you will see progress. that's usually all i hope for, otherwise i end up disappointed.

Thank you for all your feedback ladies. I dont need to buy the serum now because I just relaxed 1 week ago but you better believe by the 5th week I will be at CVS looking for this stuff

Adrienne,
That's about how much growth I get too, after 16 weeks...
ohwell.gif
That's okay though; I'm grateful for any increase!! As long as it's being retained and not breaking!!
