i just wanted to know if u have ever had an issue similar to this:

i work at a cosmetics store/salon, so looks are very important. well, i am growing my hair out so i wear my hair in a bun almost everyday.yes, i admit when i get to my 4 month mark my hair does look a bit fuzzy. i am about to be promoted to an assitant manager position and my managers actually told me i need to update my look(my hair). now i understand how management works and i don't mind having a certain look, but it's just so annoying because my managers are white and they don't know anything about my hair. there are 2 other black women that work with me but they both have 3 texture hair. one has the same exact halle berry style and even when she has a bad hair day she just slicks her hair down. the other lady hair is shoulder length and she knows nothing about hair. she usually just washes hers and go. i don't have anything against them or their hair, but my managers just look at all of us and think we are black and have the same hair. it's just annoying. i will be leaving soon. not just because of this, but this has just added.

im 3b/c BUT i work at a large department store and there are only three other natural women besides me. two have locs and the other is an older woman sporting a twa

Did she specifically state that you needed to change your hair? I thought buns were a professional look.

I had one job where the manager told me to do something different with my hair. I was having a bad hair day, and opted to wear a scarf. She said it was not professional. After that, whenever I'd have a bad hair day, instead of worrying about it, I'd just put on a wig (had a pretty good collection, too). I just didn't want hair to control my life--my mood, my time getting ready in the morning, how I felt about myself, how other people treated me, etc. I'm not saying the solution is to wear a wig, though. It just worked for me. BTW, are you going to pass up the promotion?

No, I am not the only one with that texture. There are several of us here but I think only 1 or 2 ladies have length that reaches their shoulders. This is not the most fashion forward office so as long as it is neat it is ok.
I am the one who can be fuzzy closer to relaxer. I just wash more to get it to lay. Most of them wear fake hair a majority of the time.

Have you thought about getting cornrows w/ hair added or doing a braid out. Since this is a fashion forward/looks oriented job I'm sure they'd appreciate a uniqueness in style. Which I'm sure is why the woman mentioned your bun, she probably just wants to see you in a progressive style vs a conservative one.

Me too!! Well there is a bi racial lady, but you can't really tell by looking at her. She has 2a? type hair, straight with wave.

I don't want anyone to get upset and please just see this as another opinion.

First I want to congratulate you on getting promoted. Secondly without knowing any of the other things going on in your office and only talking about the hair issue I would not leave my job just because the manager said to update my look. Again, I say this without including anything else that may be going on at your workplace..just the hair issue.

Reason I say this is because when i go to the cosmetic counters I have to admit..I do expect the people to look a certain way or have a certain style because of the way they look, weather it be a funky afro, sleeked out straight style or chic halle cut..it don't matter the texture or the length..just that its different and creative. I would expect buns on office gals..but not on someone who is trying to sell me cosmetics...I know my friends and i like to go to the cosmetics section of department stores here just because the girls (and the odd guy) are so funky looking and we get tons of ideas from the way they look. Sometimes we even wished we worked at that job so we could be all done up to go to work.

On the flip side I know that it is just a job like anyother, I also understand that you are all about growing out your hair and not about looking glammed up for work at the expense of your hair...but i'm just saying that the type of work you are in is supposed to sell a fantasy and you have to look the part. Its not just about the cosmetics but the whole package...I don't know if i'm making sense but i have a friend who went through a similar situation..she was white but worked in what would be considered an upscale urban clothing store...she had really no interest in doing her hair and would always throw it in a pony tail..she was told flat out that if she didn't start glamming up her style...maybe she should reconsider working there...Again...on one hand it is wrong..and on the flip side..the point of her job was to sell an image.

Sorry if i upset anyone....That was really not my intention. And as for me, I am the only black person and only 4a/b working in my area....funny thing is ...i do a bun most everyday but my coworkers think i'm lucky because my hair can stay in a bun without having to put umpteen bobby pins in it. They have watched me undo it at coffee break..spray with my little bottle of water and rebun with one or two pins. I laugh just watching their faces.

Did she say that you needed to update your look and you assumed that she meant that you needed to update your hair? Do you have to wear a uniform at the cosmetics store/salon? Is there a chance that your look is a little outdated outside of how you wear your hair(shoes, clothing, make-up, jewelry, nails)? Is there a chance that you do need to update your hairstyle? There are a lot of other protective hairstyles that are not buns.

When stores make their money off of making women look beautiful they often have people who look cutting edge working behind the counter. What do the other black women look like (are they younger than you, how do they dress)?

Since you said fuzzy around 4 months - I assume that you are stretching your relaxer. I can't access if management is discriminating against you because of your hair texture or if you truly need to update your look. If you are about to be promoted to the assistant manager position I strongly doubt that your fuzzy hair is holding you back. Did you ask your managers exactly what they meant by updating your look?

I'm not doubting your opinion it's just that it is hard to be objective when we can't see your look.

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h

asha thanks u made a really good point. i will try to post pics of my hair once i find out how to post a link ( i have a mac computer). i don't wear my hair in a bun every single day. i normally work 4 or 5 days a week. so i wear my hair down about 1 or 2 weeks out of the month. i only wear a bun because it's healthier for my hair. i don't like to put alot of stress on my hair by using heat all the time. i often airdry so that why i wear buns. also when i wear a bun i make sure it is slick and i wear all sorts of of jewelry to keep my bun secure. i don't feel i have bad hair days, but when u haven't had a relaxer in awhile sometimes my hair isn't as smooth. one of the other black women wears a bun just as much as me, but her bun is much smoother and neat because of her texture. anyway let me try to post a link.

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h

hey atlantatiffany...can't wait to see your pics..just remember regardless of what you decide to do (stay at your job or not) they are promoting you so you must be doing something right

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h

i finally added a link with a few pics of my hair.

i didn't see some of your posts before so i want to make sure i answer them.

no i really don't think my look is outdated. i am the most fashionable person at my job. i was really suprised when she told me that, because everyone really dresses the same. i work at ulta, so some of you may know what the store is like. ulta isn't upscale like a departmen store. we actually wear black aprons over our clothing, so the company isn't that fashion forward. actually i am know at work for trends and fasion. i wear so many different earrings, all the associates call me beyonce because she always wears big earrings.

another thing is, in the meeting the managers were telling how great i am and everything but then this style thing came up. also i don't mind being really jazzy at work, but i do alot of work and i mean alot of work. so some days i can't do stock in heels, i have to wear flats. so that kind of pisses me off. the first ulta i worked at we had carpet so i wore heels everyday. at this ulta the store has tile and wearing heels HURTS so bad. i really cannot do it all the time.

anyway i have done what they asked and i haven't heard one signle thing. so i will pass on the promotion. not just because of this, there have been other things that have been adding up, but this is just the end.

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h

I am not the only 4a/b person at my job but there are not many black women at my job and I am the only one in management. Most of the sistas at my job have short hair and wear weaves. My hair is 2.5 inches from bra strap so when I wear my hair out they assume mine is a weave too.

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h

theres one one other black girl where i work an she had waist length relaxed hair. but she doesnt relax it bone straight so her texture looks really "fluffy"

Re: r u the only woman at your job with 4a or 4b h
