Are serums only for shine or do they actually moisturize the hair. it they moisturize do you have to seal it in with anything like Shea butter?

Quick Reply (IMO): Serums are generally not moisturizes. If its a water based serums perhaps it could be, depending on what product you are using. Could u list which serum you are talking about?

Serums are not moisturizers, they only seal in moisture. The purpose of using one is to create a shrink wrap effect on your hair strands, creating a seal and a gloss, making the hair shiny, smooth, and healthy "looking". They also make the hair feel silkier. But yes, products that are moisturizers with "added silicone" could be both moisturizing and glossing. However, silicone by itself will not moisturize the hair.
